Summary: The employment of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) in designing luminescent metal compounds has received significant attention. These compounds possess strong sigma-donor properties, which bring stability to the system and result in highly emissive complexes. NHC complexes containing organic chromophores such as naphthalimide, pyrene, and carbazole exhibit rich emission behavior and have attracted extensive interest. This review describes the design strategies and recent advances of NHC-based luminescent metal complexes.

Regioselective Syntheses of Imidazo[4,5-b]pyrazin-2-ylidene-Based Chelates and Blue Emissive Iridium(III) Phosphors for Solution-Processed OLEDs

Summary: Six novel homoleptic Ir(III) complexes with imidazo-[4,5-b]pyrazin-2-ylidene chelates have been successfully designed and synthesized. These complexes exhibit narrowband blue and broadened green emission in degassed toluene solution, with high photoluminescent quantum yields. The tert-butylphenyl cyclometalate is found to be more electron donating than the N-phenyl cyclometalate, resulting in a red-shifted emission. Furthermore, OLED and hyper-OLED devices utilizing these complexes as dopants or sensitizers have demonstrated high external quantum efficiencies and narrowband emissions.

Excited-State Modification of Phenylimidazole-Based Cyclometalated Ir(III) Complexes through Secondary Bulky Aryl Substitution and Inductive Modification Enhances the Blue Emission Efficiency in Phosphorescent OLEDs

Summary: It was found that the excited state properties of pim-based Ir(III) complexes can be modulated by the nature of the peripheral substituent and the presence of an EWG substituent. Incorporation of bulky TPh/ITPh substituents in the second coordination sphere significantly enhanced emission efficiencies, enabling efficient blue electroluminescence. Among the fabricated blue emitting TPh/ITPh-substituted Ir(III) complexes, Ir(ITPhpim-F)3, Ir(TPhpim-F2)3, and Ir(ITPhpim-F2)3 showed high solid radiative quantum yields and were tested as blue-emitting dopants for blue phosphorescent OLEDs. Ir(ITPhpim-F)3-doped multilayer device exhibited the best performance with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 21.0%, a maximum current efficiency of 43.6 cd/A, and CIE coordinates of 0.18 and 0.31.

Different isomers showed different effects on emission spectra. High photoluminescent efficiency and color coordinates were achieved in devices based on two isomeric compounds. OLEDs with one of the isomeric compounds as a sensitizing phosphor also exhibited high luminescence efficiency.

Design Approach of Lifetime Extending Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Sensitizers for Highly Efficient Fluorescence Devices

Homoleptic cyclometalated dibenzothiophene-NHC-iridium(iii) complexes for efficient blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes

Summary: In this study, NHC-Ir complexes utilizing DBT and DBF moieties to enhance deep-blue phosphorescence emission efficiency were synthesized and compared for their electrochemical and photophysical properties. The use of DBT moieties resulted in longer emission wavelengths, while the meridional isomer exhibited easier oxidation and red-shifted emission compared to facial forms. The replacement of the oxygen atom in the DBF unit with sulfur did not significantly alter the emission efficiency, achieving high-end deep-blue phosphorescence with unprecedented CIE coordinates.
