Frontal Polymerizations: From Chemical Perspectives to Macroscopic Properties and Applications

Benjamin A. Suslick et al.

Summary: Most thermoplastics and thermoset polymeric materials are synthesized and processed using energy-inefficient and environmentally burdensome methods. Frontal polymerization provides an attractive and scalable alternative by utilizing the usually wasted polymerization heat. Only an initial thermal or photo stimulus is needed for frontal polymerization, which locally ignites the reaction and leads to a self-perpetuating reaction zone. The choice of monomer, initiator/catalyst, and additives determines the speed and maximum temperature of the polymer front, and there are various applications for frontally generated materials.

How to overcome the light penetration issue in photopolymerization? An example for the preparation of high content iron-containing opaque composites and application in 3D printing

Qiang Ma et al.

Summary: Research on MPCs has made significant progress in the past 20 years, but there are still challenges in its theory and preparation. This study introduced an efficient photothermal synergistic approach to overcome the limitations of light reaction alone and successfully fabricated iron filler-based composites. The cured composites showed improved mechanical properties and achieved successful 3D printing with good spatial resolution.

Frontal-Photopolymerization of Fully Biobased Epoxy Composites

Camilla Noe et al.

Summary: This study successfully demonstrated the radical-induced cationic frontal photopolymerization (RICFP) of fully biobased epoxy composites. This curing strategy significantly reduces the curing time, improves the efficiency of composite fabrication, and enhances the mechanical properties of the composites. The fully biobased composites show comparable or even higher mechanical strength compared with the corresponding composites fabricated with conventional CE resin.

Rapid multiple-front polymerization of fiber-reinforced polymer composites

P. J. Centellas et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of multiple polymerization fronts on the manufacturing of composites. It finds that localized void formation, panel thickness increase, and thermal spike between two merging fronts have a detrimental effect on composite performance. By modifying the layup from thermally insulated boundaries to thermally conductive boundaries, all adverse phenomena at the merging fronts are successfully mitigated, leading to improved composite mechanical properties.

Storable, Dual-Component Systems for Frontal Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Benjamin A. Suslick et al.

Summary: Frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) catalyzed by Grubbs-type Ru complexes allows for the rapid and energy-efficient synthesis of high-performance structural plastics. By using a thermally latent bis-N-heterocyclic carbene complex and Cu-I coreagents, the system can be primed for rapid reactivity after thermal initiation, leading to the formation of robust resins with enhanced stability. Additionally, controlling the Cu to Ru ratio significantly impacts the reaction velocity and temperature, as well as the glass-transition temperature of the resulting polymers.

Catalyzed frontal polymerization-aided 3D printing of epoxy thermosets

Zimeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the incorporation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene oxide (GO), and discontinuous carbon fibers (d-CFs) in epoxy thermosets to control the frontal polymerization. It demonstrates that CNTs and GO significantly reduce the activation energy of frontal polymerization and enable decoupling of frontal temperature from frontal velocity. The incorporation of CNTs also enhances the printability of epoxy resins in 3D printing via frontal polymerization.

Front velocity dependence on vinyl ether and initiator concentration in radical-induced cationic frontal polymerization of epoxies

Brecklyn R. Groce et al.

Summary: The study found that an increase in vinyl ether content resulted in higher front velocities for divinyl ethers, but increased hydroxymonovinyl ether either decreased the front velocity or suppressed frontal polymerization. Additionally, the kinetic effects of the superacid generator and thermal radical initiator with varying vinyl ether content were investigated, showing that increasing concentrations of initiators increased the front velocity, with the system exhibiting higher sensitivity to the superacid generator concentration.

Summary: A new prepreg technology was established using a dual curing system, with HDDA and frontally polymerisable components based on epoxide resin. The study focused on the polymerisation of HDDA using BCPC as the radical initiator, without cationic ring-opening reaction of the epoxy. By investigating the effects of HDDA amount on radical polymerisation, stiffness of the gel, and thermal mechanical properties, the study successfully produced snowflake composite using RICFP-prepregs.
