Lambda-cyhalothrin-loaded nanocapsules pose an unacceptable acute toxicological risk to zebrafish (Danio rerio) at the adult and larval stages but present an acceptable risk to embryos

Xueping Huang et al.

Summary: This study prepared a series of LC-MCs with different particle sizes and evaluated their toxicity, revealing that the release and sedimentation behavior in water, as well as the toxicity to zebrafish, were all particle size-dependent. Exposure to micron-sized LC-MCs resulted in significantly lower fish mortality and malformations compared to nanosized LC-MCs, indicating the importance of regulating MC production in an appropriate size range for safe pesticide applications.

Octaphenyl polyoxyethylene regulates the flexibility of pyraclostrobin-loaded soft microcapsules by interfacial polymerization for better foliar adhesion and pesticide utilization

Haichao Cao et al.

Summary: This study utilized OP as an emulsifier to control the particle size distribution of microcapsules (MCs) and investigated the effects of different levels of OP-10 on the properties and pesticide release of polymer MCs. The results showed that a higher content of OP-10 significantly improved the deformation, adhesion, and release performance of MCs, but adversely affected the safety of zebrafish.

Hydrogel Microcapsules with a Thin Oil Layer: Smart Triggered Release via Diverse Stimuli

Hye-Seon Jeong et al.

Summary: A hydrogel microcapsule with an intermediate thin oil layer is developed for smart release of diverse cargoes triggered by stimuli. The oil layer acts as an effective diffusion barrier, allowing encapsulation of various small cargoes within a porous hydrogel shell until a stimulus destabilizes the oil layer for on-demand release.

Risk of pesticide pollution at the global scale

Fiona H. M. Tang et al.

Summary: Pesticides are widely used in agriculture to protect food production but also pose risks to water quality, biodiversity, and human health. A global study found that 64% of agricultural land worldwide is at risk of pesticide pollution, with 31% at high risk, particularly in areas with high biodiversity and water scarcity. High-concern regions such as South Africa, China, India, Australia, and Argentina were identified as facing high pesticide pollution risk, high biodiversity, and water scarcity issues.

Improving the efficacy against crop foliage disease by regulating fungicide adhesion on leaves with soft microcapsules

Shou-he Pan et al.

Summary: By incorporating polyethylene glycol (PEG) of different molecular weights into the microcapsule shell, the release profile and contact area of the microcapsules to leaves can be altered. The study revealed that adding PEG with appropriate molecular weight can regulate the structure of the microcapsule shell to improve the affinity between the microcapsules and leaves.

Influence of rainfall and seasonal crop practices on nutrient and pesticide runoff from soybean dominated agricultural areas in Pampean streams, Argentina

Victoria Soledad Andrade et al.

Summary: Climate change is expected to increase spatial variability in rainfall, leading to higher rainfall rates in the Pampas region during spring and summer, which may result in more pesticides and nutrients being carried into surface water systems. The growth stage of crops can also impact pesticide and nutrient runoff. In this study, the influence of rainfall and seasonal crop practices on water quality was assessed, with significant effects observed on pesticide concentrations and water quality.
