Comparative Study of the Antimicrobial Activity of Selenium Nanoparticles With Different Surface Chemistry and Structure

Nenad Filipovic et al.

Summary: Three types of selenium nanoparticles were synthesized using different stabilizers and reducing agents, and their effects on the antimicrobial activity against several common bacterial strains were evaluated. It was found that selenium nanoparticles obtained under different synthesis conditions exhibited varying antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity. The SeNPs-BSA formulation showed significantly lower cytotoxicity compared to the other two formulations.

Shear-mediated sol-gel transition of regenerated silk allows the formation of Janus-like microgels

Zenon Toprakcioglu et al.

Summary: This study presents a droplet-microfluidic strategy for generating asymmetric tubular-like microgels from reconstituted silk fibroin. The shear stress within the microchannel promotes surface protein aggregation, resulting in the asymmetric morphology of the microgels. By varying flow rates, the morphology of the microgels can be controlled, while the radius of curvature of the asymmetric microgels is correlated to the wall shear stress.

Selenium Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications: From Development and Characterization to Therapeutics

Claudio Ferro et al.

Summary: Selenium is an essential element for human health, incorporated into selenocysteine in the body and used to synthesize selenoproteins. While it has beneficial properties, excessive intake can lead to toxicity. Selenium nanoparticles are a less toxic alternative for delivering drug payloads to specific cells, with potential applications in cancer therapy.

Bombyx mori Silk Fibroin Regeneration in Solution of Lanthanide Ions: A Systematic Investigation

Giorgio Rizzo et al.

Summary: Silk Fibroin (SF) obtained from Bombyx mori can be processed into scaffolds from aqueous solutions using chaotropic salts. By modifying the standard Ajisawa's method with CeCl3, it is possible to regenerate SF as a fibrous material with an ordered structure and doped with Ce+3 ions. Lanthanide ions are found to solubilize SF and favor the reprecipitation of fibrous SF, making them potential candidates for developing new photonic systems.

Decoupling manufacturing from application in additive manufactured antimicrobial materials

Dominic J. Wales et al.

Summary: 3D printable materials based on polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) are capable of controlling the synthesis and stabilisation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and their synergistic antimicrobial activity. The interaction of the ionic liquid moieties with the silver precursor enables the controlled in situ formation and stabilisation of AgNPs after the printing process, demonstrating an effective separation of device manufacturing from on-demand generation of nanomaterials to avoid potential aging.
