Evaluation of eye response using a wearable display with automatic interpupillary distance adjustment

Summary: In this study, a wearable display with automatic control of interpupillary distance (IPD) is introduced. A test-bed module is designed based on the proposed design to evaluate the adjustment accuracy and viewing effect. The distance between the user's eyes can be measured and adjusted using IR camera sensors and a micro-actuator module. Image processing of IR camera sensor images allows for accurate determination of each pupil's position. Based on the measured information, a micro-actuator module can automatically adjust the binocular distance to fit each viewer's IPD. The system demonstrated high accuracy in automatic IPD adjustment and improved displayed image quality and 3D immersive experience.
