Dip-and-pull ambient pressure photoelectron spectroscopy as a spectroelectrochemistry tool for probing molecular redox processes

Robert H. Temperton et al.

Summary: This paper presents a proof-of-principle study on the oxidation and reduction reactions of a model organometallic complex, iron hexacyanide, in an aqueous solution using Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (APXPS). The study demonstrates that controlled redox reactions can occur on the working electrode's electrochemically active liquid meniscuses, which were observed using APXPS. The paper also includes a detailed discussion on critical experimental considerations as guidance for similar experiments.

Photoionization of the aqueous phase: clusters, droplets and liquid jets

Ruth Signorell et al.

Summary: This perspective article reviews the specific challenges of photoemission spectroscopy in studying bulk liquid water, aqueous solutions, water droplets, and water clusters. The focus is on accurately retrieving energetics and photoelectron angular information from measured spectra and understanding the differences in different aqueous environments. Various phenomena, such as multiple energy-dependent electron scattering and different energy referencing methods, are discussed. Recommendations on accounting for or minimizing the influence of electron scattering are provided.

Operando attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy for water splitting

A. Bieberle-Hutter et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the application of operando attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy for water splitting, focusing on opportunities, challenges, recent results, and future perspectives. Stable and robust operando ATR-FTIR measurements revealed changes in surface species during water oxidation. Combining ATR-FTIR measurements with microkinetic modeling enables identification of the reaction mechanism in water splitting and accelerates the development of tailored catalysts.

Hematite-based nanomaterials for photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs): A short review

Abdul Hannan Asif et al.

Summary: Excessive use of pharmaceuticals and personal care products has led to the presence of trace amounts of PPCPs in water. Photocatalysis with alpha-Fe2O3 as a catalyst shows potential for efficient degradation of PPCPs, although its limited application due to faster electron-hole recombination. Numerous studies have focused on modifying alpha-Fe2O3 to improve its efficiency in recent years.

Low-energy constraints on photoelectron spectra measured from liquid water and aqueous solutions

Sebastian Malerz et al.

Summary: The study reveals that quasi-elastic scattering distorts the photoelectron peak shapes significantly, and accurate determination of electron binding energy requires large electron energies. Additionally, the onset of indirect autoionization phenomena and the increasing importance of vibrational inelastic electron scattering processes at lower photon and electron kinetic energies are highlighted.
