Reversible Photoswitching between Fluorescence and Room Temperature Phosphorescence by Manipulating Excited State Dynamics in Molecular Aggregates

Xuanhang Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates successful realization of reversible switching between fluorescence and phosphorescence through light control, using the effective strategy of integrating o-BFT with dibenzofuran and dithienylbenzothiophene. The dual emission of fluorescence and RTP in o-BFT can be controlled through alternate UV and visible light irradiations. The study suggests the domination of photo-controlled triplet-to-singlet Forster resonance energy transfer in triplet inactivation, preserving the initial fluorescence for photoreversible fluorescence-RTP switching.

From Precision Colloidal Hybrid Materials to Advanced Functional Assemblies

Veikko Linko et al.

Summary: Colloids encompass a wide range of particles, including synthetic nanoparticles and functional biological units. While synthetic colloids have been extensively researched, they often suffer from imperfections in size, shape, and interactions. In contrast, biological colloids offer precision in these aspects. Inspired by biological systems, materials science is exploring ways to achieve structural control and novel functionality in synthetic colloids. This includes guided assemblies of biological motifs, DNA nanotechnology-based assemblies, and atomically precise structures. The goal is to develop stimulus-responsive colloids with complex functions, similar to biological learning. By controlling colloidal size and dispersity, various functionalities can be achieved.

Polymer Mechanochromism from Force-Tuned Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer

Huan Hu et al.

Summary: This study reports the development of a mechanochromic mechanophore based on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) for real-time strain sensing in polyurethane films. The mechanophore exhibited high sensitivity and excellent reversibility to stress, and the mechanochromism was attributed to chain-transduced force. Density function theory (DFT) calculation was performed to analyze the force-tuned ESIPT process. This research lays the foundation for practical applications in real-time stress/strain sensing.

Sterically Hindered Diarylethenes with a Benzobis(thiadiazole) Bridge: Enantiospecific Transformation and Reversible Photosuperstructures

Mengqi Li et al.

Summary: Photochromic diarylethenes with reversible regulation by external light irradiation have important applications in various fields. However, there are still unresolved issues regarding the modulation of bistability, reduction of photoinactive conformers, and achievement of reversible enantiospecific transformation. To address these issues, we developed a diarylethene system based on benzobis(thiadiazole) that successfully separated multiple conformers, resulting in higher photocyclization quantum yields and enantiospecific photoreactions.
