Provider perspectives on emergency department initiation of medication assisted treatment for alcohol use disorder

Thibault Philippine et al.

Summary: This study identifies barriers and facilitators to the treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in the emergency department (ED) and designs interventions to address the identified barriers. The results show that ED providers face barriers related to knowledge, clarification of roles, and social stigma associated with AUD. By applying the Behavior Change Wheel framework, qualitative interview data is transformed into evidence-based interventions for the implementation of an ED-based program for the treatment of AUD.

A Mixed Methods Evaluation of Interventions to Meet the Requirements of California Senate Bill 1152 in the Emergency Departments of a Public Hospital System

Breena R. Taira et al.

Summary: This study evaluated interventions to meet the requirements of Senate Bill (SB) 1152, which mandates hospitals to offer resources to homeless patients at discharge. The study found poor compliance with SB 1152 and identified barriers to implementation, including challenges in universal screening for homelessness and incongruity of requirements with the emergency department setting.

Implementation of Oral and Extended-Release Naltrexone for the Treatment of Emergency Department Patients With Moderate to Severe Alcohol Use Disorder: Feasibility and Initial Outcomes

Erik S. Anderson et al.

Summary: A clinical protocol combining substance use navigation with oral or intramuscular naltrexone was implemented to improve follow-up in addiction treatment after emergency department discharge for patients with alcohol use disorder. The study found that 15.3% of patients attended formal addiction treatment within 30 days after discharge, with a higher rate among those who received extended-release intramuscular naltrexone. Future research should further investigate the effectiveness of naltrexone and substance use navigation for emergency department patients with alcohol use disorder.
