Resveratrol ameliorates polycystic ovary syndrome via transzonal projections within oocyte-granulosa cell communication

Mingyue Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of transzonal projections (TZPs) in the pathogenesis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It found that injury to TZPs and overexpression of calcium-/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II beta (CaMKII beta) may be involved in PCOS. The study also demonstrates that resveratrol (RSV) can effectively improve ovarian function and estrus cycle disorder by restoring TZP through increased cytoplasmic calcium levels and excessive phosphorylation of CaMKII beta.

Mechanical ventilation and COPD: from pathophysiology to ventilatory management

Gaetano Scaramuzzo et al.

Summary: This article explores the importance and specificity of mechanical ventilation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in relation to morphological changes in the lungs and chest wall. Lung emphysema and reduced elastic recoil increase expiratory time, worsening lung overinflation, while chronic airway inflammation increases resistance and can lead to distal air-trapping. Muscle wasting and dominance of fast fibers may result in weakness and earlier onset of muscle fatigue, prolonging the weaning process.

CFD simulation of porous microsphere particles in the airways of pulmonary fibrosis

Zhilong Qin et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of pulmonary fibrosis (PF) on the deposition of inhalable microspheres in the respiratory tract. Using computational fluid dynamics, airway models with different degrees of PF in humans and mice were simulated. The results showed that PF increases microsphere deposition in the upper respiratory tract and decreases bronchial deposition in both humans and mice. Porous microspheres with low density can ensure deposition in the lower respiratory tract and larger particle size. The deposition patterns differ between humans and mice, suggesting the need for specific microsphere processing for different individuals.

Dry Powder Inhalers in the Digitalization Era: Current Status and Future Perspectives

Styliani Xiroudaki et al.

Summary: The term drug delivery systems has replaced previous terms like dosage forms to emphasize the importance of drug carriers, but may not always be fully justified in the case of delivery devices, which require a deep understanding of the complex formulation-device-patient interplay. Despite progress in particle engineering and device design, dry powder inhalers' clinical performance is limited by variable patients' breathing patterns, prompting the need for next-generation DPIs to adapt to individual respiratory capacity. The recent wave of digitalization in healthcare and industry may drive DPI technology towards personalized device-formulation-patient liaison, aligning novel technologies with a systems theory approach.
