Using UAS-Aided Photogrammetry to Monitor and Quantify the Geomorphic Effects of Extreme Weather Events in Tectonically Active Mass Waste-Prone Areas: The Case of Medicane Ianos

Evelina Kotsi et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and photogrammetry to monitor and quantify geomorphic changes before and after extreme weather events. The combination of these tools allows for accurate delineation of instabilities, volumetric estimates of morphometric changes, and insights into erosion and deposition processes. This approach provides key insights into geomorphic processes that are otherwise difficult to observe and can contribute to risk management and sustainable development in high-risk areas.

Performance Testing of Optical Flow Time Series Analyses Based on a Fast, High-Alpine Landslide

Doris Hermle et al.

Summary: Accurate remote analyses of high-alpine landslides are crucial for alpine safety. This study applies optical flow-time series analysis to analyze one of the fastest and most critical debris flow source zones in Austria. The results show that optical flow time series analysis generates a better signal extraction, reducing noise and widening the observable velocity range.

A Novel Approach to Landslide Monitoring based on Unmanned Aerial System Photogrammetry

Ivan Jakopec et al.

Summary: Landslides can cause fatalities and property damage, so it is necessary to understand the kinematics of sliding masses. Geodetic surveying techniques, such as photogrammetric survey by Unmanned Aerial System, can be used for landslide monitoring. This paper presents a new method for calculating landslide displacements based on photogrammetric survey data, which does not require the production of dense point clouds or terrain models. The accuracy of the new method was tested in a field, successfully determining known displacements with a 3D accuracy of +/- 1.3 cm.

Using Sentinel-1 radar amplitude time series to constrain the timings of individual landslides: a step towards understanding the controls on monsoon-triggered landsliding

Katy Burrows et al.

Summary: This study presents a method to determine the timing of landslides using Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar amplitude time series. By combining four techniques, it is possible to accurately determine the timing of 20%-30% of landslides within a few days. This method provides crucial information on landslide timings in cloud-covered regions.

Monitoring and analysis of the exceptional displacements affecting debris at the top of a highly disaggregated rockslide

Tommaso Carla et al.

Summary: The activity of large rockslides is influenced by various factors, with continued deformation leading to widespread degradation of the slide mass. This study provides updated insights on the Ruinon rockslide based on over a decade of monitoring, revealing that the upper debris moves significantly faster than the substrate and is also impacted by precipitation events.
