Summary: The idea that land use in the surroundings may affect the abundance of arthropods on a location plays an important role in the argument that agriculture is the prime cause of the recently discovered general decline of insects. Our study found that total arthropod abundance did not change with distance, but was influenced by vegetation height and landscape complexity. Vegetation height had a positive effect on abundance in crop land and a negative effect in grassland. Landscape complexity only affected abundance when measured on a larger scale.

DynaMETE: a hybrid MaxEnt-plus-mechanism theory of dynamic macroecology

Summary: The Maximum Entropy Theory of Ecology (METE) predicts macroecological metrics in relatively static ecosystems, but fails in disturbed ecosystems with time-varying state variables. A new theory, DynaMETE, extends macroecological theory to dynamic systems by considering disturbances and predicts time trajectories of state variables and shapes of macroecological metrics under disturbances such as shifts in demographic rates. Through combining MaxEnt inference with explicit dynamical mechanisms, DynaMETE is a candidate theory for ecosystems responding to disturbances.
