Falling living standards during the COVID-19 crisis: Quantitative evidence from nine developing countries

Dennis Egger et al.

Summary: Despite a lack of systematic quantitative evidence, it is evident that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has led to declines in employment and income in low- and middle-income countries. Household coping strategies and government assistance have been insufficient to sustain precrisis living standards, leading to widespread food insecurity and dire economic conditions. Promising policy responses are discussed, along with speculation about the risk of persistent adverse effects, especially among vulnerable groups such as children.

COVID-19 implications on household income and food security in Kenya and Uganda: Findings from a rapid assessment

Monica K. Kansiime et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on household income and food security in Kenya and Uganda. Results show that income shocks and worsened food security were prevalent, with vulnerable households more likely to adopt food-based coping strategies. Membership in savings and loan groups was associated with less income shocks and reduced food consumption. Recommendations include structural changes in social security systems and support for businesses and food supply chains.
