Is selenium beneficial or detrimental to earthworm? Growth and metabolism responses of Eisenia Fetida to Na2SeO3 exposure

Qiuyun Xu et al.

Summary: The uneven distribution of selenium in soils leads to varying effects on earthworms, with low and medium exposure concentrations not significantly affecting growth, and only high concentrations leading to growth inhibition. Selenium exposure alters the metabolism of certain amino acids and selenoamino acids, affecting overall metabolism levels at medium and high exposure concentrations. Reactive oxygen species derived at high concentrations are likely responsible for the growth inhibition effect of selenium on earthworms.

Seasonal variations and feedback from microplastics and cadmium on soil organisms in agricultural fields

Xiaofeng Jiang et al.

Summary: Plastic film mulching is an important agricultural technology that can increase crop yield and maintain soil moisture. However, long-term use of plastic film can lead to plastic residues in soils, which can negatively affect soil organisms and crop quality. This study investigated the seasonal variations and correlations of microplastics and cadmium in farmland soils in Wuxi, China. The results showed that microplastics were abundant in the soils, with polyethylene microplastics being the main component. The abundance of microplastics in winter was significantly correlated with cadmium, indicating the potential risk of coexposure to soil organisms. The study also demonstrated the impact of microplastic heavy metal pollution on earthworms, suggesting that microplastics can act as vectors for heavy metal transfer in the soil environment.

State-of-the-art OMICS strategies against toxic effects of heavy metals in plants: A review

Shafeeq Ur Rahman et al.

Summary: Environmental pollution caused by heavy metals from anthropogenic activities has become a topic of increasing concern. Heavy metals, especially non-essential carcinogens, have been identified as major air, water, and soil pollutants that negatively impact the quantity, quality, and safety of plant-based food worldwide. Plants exposed to heavy metals experience reduced growth and yield, but they have developed complex defense mechanisms to avoid or tolerate the toxic effects. OMICS strategies have been widely used to understand the mechanisms of plant response and adaptation to heavy metal stress. Recent advancements in the understanding of the interaction between heavy metals and plants at molecular and cellular levels, as well as plants' defense strategies, are summarized in this review. The use of transcriptomics, genomics, metabolomics, proteomics, and ionomics for studying plant responses to heavy metal toxicity is reviewed, and challenges and future recommendations are discussed.

Combined toxic effects of dioxin-like PCB77 with Fe-based nanoparticles in earthworm Eisenia fetida

Fan Zhang et al.

Summary: Iron-based nanomaterials, specifically nano-zero valent iron (nZVI), show promise for remediating persistent halogenated contaminants like dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls. However, their interactions with beneficial soil functions and joint toxicity effects remain unknown. This study found that both nZVI and PCB77 inhibited earthworm growth and reproduction, with a synergistic effect observed in combined exposure. The addition of nZVI reduced PCB77 levels while increasing its accumulation in earthworms, potentially due to aggravated epidermal damage.
