Taking full advantage ofmodelling to better assess environmental risk due to xenobiotics-the all-in-one facility MOSAIC

Sandrine Charles et al.

Summary: This study emphasizes the importance of environmental risk assessment in the European Union, including the use of mechanistic effect models and TKTD models, and the application of the MOSAIC tool in this regard. It also highlights the necessity of considering the time dimension of exposure and the support of MOSAIC for bioaccumulation metrics.

A critical review of effect modeling for ecological risk assessment of plant protection products

Floriane Larras et al.

Summary: This article provides an overview of modeling approaches for evaluating the effects of plant protection products (PPP) on biota. Various models have been developed for different species and environmental settings. Mechanistic models are increasingly recognized by EFSA for regulatory risk assessment of PPP. However, field data testing and sensitivity/uncertainty analyses are lacking. Accurate modeling of PPP effects and other stressors on living organisms can contribute to more sustainable environmental management.

A meta-analysis of ecotoxicological models used for plant protection product risk assessment before their placing on the market

Floriane Larras et al.

Summary: This review examined the use of modelling approaches in the ecotoxicology section of PPP active substance assessment reports in the European Union. The study found that models are important tools in PPP risk assessment, particularly for conventional active substances. However, there is an imbalance in model usage among different biological groups, and a gap exists between the models used in reports and those available in the literature.

Application of General Unified Threshold Models of Survival Models for Regulatory Aquatic Pesticide Risk Assessment Illustrated with An Example for the Insecticide Chlorpyrifos

Theo Brock et al.

Summary: The GUTS models translate time-variable chemical exposure information into expected survival of animals, and are considered ready for use in aquatic risk assessment for pesticides and aquatic fauna. This paper aims to illustrate how GUTS models can be used in regulatory environmental risk assessment for pesticides, particularly when risks are triggered by lower tiers in acute and chronic risk assessment.

EFSA's OpenFoodTox: An open source toxicological database on chemicals in food and feed and its future developments

J. L. C. M. Dorne et al.

Summary: EFSA has conducted risk assessments for over 5000 substances through its Scientific Panels, Units and Scientific Committee since its establishment in 2002. OpenFoodTox, an open source toxicological database, provides data for substances evaluated by EFSA, facilitating data sharing and chemical risk assessment. The database is structured using OECD templates and offers tools for downloading and searching, with future developments including integration of new properties and in silico modeling platforms.

A review on analytical methods for pharmaceutical and personal care products and their transformation products

Yuan Meng et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive review of analytical methods for environmental samples, emphasizing the importance of quick and effective sample extraction and clean-up methods. Chromatographic methods coupled with mass spectrometry are highlighted as an effective approach for determining PPCPs, while high-resolution mass spectrometry shows promise for screening unknown transformation products.

Sourcing data on chemical properties and hazard data from the US-EPA CompTox Chemicals Dashboard: A practical guide for human risk assessment

Antony J. Williams et al.

Summary: For the past six decades, human health risk assessment of chemicals has relied on in vivo data from human epidemiological and experimental animal toxicological studies, but now there is a need to develop and implement new approach methodologies. These methodologies include a growing number of in silico and in vitro data streams to inform hazard properties of chemicals, providing a science-based foundation for human hazard and risk characterization.

A Simplified Population-Level Landscape Model Identifying Ecological Risk Drivers of Pesticide Applications, Part One: Case Study for Large Herbivorous Mammals

David Tarazona et al.

Summary: Environmental risk assessment is crucial for pesticide authorization, and current approaches may not fully capture the complexity of agricultural ecosystems. A simplified model presented in this work aims to predict the impact of pesticides on population abundance, with a focus on terrestrial vertebrates.
