Urea nitrogenated mesoporous activated carbon derived from oil palm empty fruit bunch for high-performance supercapacitor

Heri Rustamaji et al.

Summary: This study synthesized urea nitrogenated activated carbon (N-ACU) from oil palm empty fruit bunches and investigated its performance as a supercapacitor electrode. The results showed that the urea to hydrochar impregnation ratio affected the characteristics of N-ACU and the performance of supercapacitors. Urea nitrogenated treatment on activated carbon reduced resistance and maintained the stability of the supercapacitor. This study suggests that synthesizing nitrogenated activated carbon from biomass waste is a promising method for producing electrode materials.

Biomass-derived activated carbons with extremely narrow pore size distribution via eco-friendly synthesis for supercapacitor application

Kotchaphan Kanjana et al.

Summary: Activated carbons produced from rubber seed shell, durian shell, and palm petiole via an eco-friendly self-activation method showed promising properties for supercapacitor application. The highest specific surface area and specific capacitance were obtained from palm petiole and durian shell activated carbons, attributing to their narrow pore size distribution and excellent charge storage balance. This study successfully demonstrated a better route to produce an AC-based supercapacitor electrode with comparable values to those reported in the literature.

The Effect of Modifications of Activated Carbon Materials on the Capacitive Performance: Surface, Microstructure, and Wettability

Kouao Dujearic-Stephane et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the efforts made by different research groups to enhance the performance of electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) through modification of activated carbon structures. Various porous textures, surface chemistry, and microstructure of activated carbon materials can be synthesized using different techniques, and their surface chemistry can be modified in order to improve EDLCs' performance. Introduction of heteroatoms and compositing activated carbon with metal oxide materials or conducting polymers provide additional contributions to the double-layer capacitance, leading to high capacitance. The review also discusses key parameters such as cell capacitance, operating voltage, equivalent series resistance, power density, and energy density, and how these are affected by modifying the activated carbon framework.
