A comparison of the clinical, laboratory and epidemiological features of two divergent subpopulations of Plasmodium knowlesi

Ting Huey Hu et al.

Summary: Plasmodium knowlesi, a simian malaria parasite, has two genetically distinct subpopulations in Malaysian Borneo associated with different types of macaques. A study found no significant differences in clinical and epidemiological features between the two subpopulations, and both can cause a wide spectrum of malaria disease with potentially life-threatening complications.

Genetic diversity of the full length apical membrane antigen-1 of Plasmodium knowlesi clinical isolates from Peninsular Malaysia

Y. L. Ng et al.

Summary: The genetic diversity of Plasmodium knowlesi apical membrane antigen-1 (PkAMA-1) in clinical isolates from Peninsular Malaysia is similar to that of other regions, with Domain I showing the highest diversity. A negative (purifying) selection was observed for the gene, and amino acid sequences could be categorized into 31 haplotypes. Sequence analysis revealed two distinct groups of PkAMA-1 from Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak.
