Scleral buckling versus pars plana vitrectomy in simple phakic macula-on retinal detachment: a propensity score-matched, registry-based study

Sumihiro Kawano et al.

Summary: A retrospective cohort study of patients with uncomplicated phakic macula-on retinal detachment was conducted to compare outcomes of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) versus scleral buckling (SB). The study showed a higher proportion of anatomical failures in the PPV group compared to the SB group, but no significant difference in change in best-corrected visual acuity between the two groups.

Differences in primary retinal detachment surgery conducted on holidays and workdays analyzed using the Japan Retinal Detachment Registry

Sumihiro Kawano et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the characteristics of retinal detachment (RD) and compare the outcomes of surgical interventions conducted on holidays and workdays. The results showed that there were differences in surgery time and surgeon experience between the holiday group and workday group, but no significant differences in surgical failure. Therefore, some surgeries should be postponed until workdays and proper measures should be taken to limit RD progression.

Summary: Older age, low intraocular pressure, high myopia, multiple retinal breaks, giant retinal tear, wide retinal detachment, and macula-off detachment were associated with poorer postoperative visual acuity outcomes.

Characteristics of patients with complete visual acuity recovery after vitrectomy for macula-off retinal detachment

L. Konstantinidis et al.

Summary: Patients operated within 3 days of macular detachment had significantly better chances of complete visual acuity recovery. Retained foveal depression of the detached retina appeared to be a common characteristic among patients demonstrating complete visual recovery.
