Recycling spent water treatment adsorbents for efficient electrocatalytic water oxidation reaction

Zhijie Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a strategy for converting spent adsorbents into efficient electrocatalysts by boriding process. The metal ion-laden biochar-based spent adsorbents are transformed into magnetic metal borides/biochar heterostructures. The optimized catalyst exhibits low overpotential and high current density, outperforming many catalysts synthesized from commercial materials. The high catalytic efficiency is attributed to the well-dispersed nano-sized metallic borides, active metal (oxy)hydroxides, favorable charge-transfer kinetics, as well as the heterostructure and amorphous feature.
