Recent progress in lithium-ion and lithium metal batteries

Daria Yu. Voropaeva et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the recent progress in the development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and lithium metal batteries (LMBs), based on research works published in 2021. The focus is on addressing the stability issues of cathodes and anodes, such as layered nickel-rich lithium-nickel-cobalt-manganese oxides (Ni-rich NMC) cathodes and silicon anodes. Various strategies, including doping, surface coating, and using porous structures or composites, have been explored to enhance the stability of these materials. Additional research efforts have been dedicated to suppressing dendrite formation in LMBs and exploring new hybrid polymer electrolytes.

A stable quasi-solid electrolyte improves the safe operation of highly efficient lithium-metal pouch cells in harsh environments

Zhi Chang et al.

Summary: In this study, the properties and behaviors of electrolytes confined in a sub-nanoscale environment were investigated. The electrolytes exhibited unusual characteristics, such as higher boiling points and extended voltage windows. When incorporated into lithium-metal batteries, the electrolytes resulted in cathodes without an electrolyte interphase and dendrite-free lithium-metal surfaces. Furthermore, pouch cells assembled with the electrolytes showed stable electrochemical performances even at a high working temperature of 90 degrees C.

Flexible composite solid electrolyte with 80 wt% Na3.4Zr1.9Zn0.1Si2.2P0.8O12 for solid-state sodium batteries

Lin Shen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a flexible, non-flammable, and high ion-conductive NASICON CSE by introducing small amounts of ionic liquid into the composite solid electrolyte (CSE). The NASICON CSE shows high ionic conductivity, excellent thermal stability, and good interfacial stability. The solid-state sodium batteries assembled with this NASICON CSE exhibit excellent rate performances, cycling stability, and capacity retention.

Agglomeration-Free and Air-Inert Garnet for Upgrading PEO/Garnet Composite Solid State Electrolyte

Jun Cheng et al.

Summary: Garnet-type solid electrolytes are commonly used as fillers in polymer electrolytes to improve ionic conductivity and enhance mechanical strength. However, the presence of passive layers on the surface of garnet reduces its effectiveness. By modifying garnet fillers with an amphipathic coupling agent, the air stability of garnet is extended and the dispersion in the polymer matrix is improved. This leads to improved performance of the composite electrolyte.
