Adsorption of cationic dyes onto chemically modified activated carbon: Kinetics and thermodynamic study

Mariam Sh Gohr et al.

Summary: In this study, activated carbon was successfully modified by carboxylic group via mechanical attrition in the presence of NaOH and chloroacetic acid. The modified activated carbon showed excellent adsorption performance for methylene blue and crystal violet dyes and achieved equilibrium within 15 minutes. The adsorption isotherms of both dyes were described by the Langmuir model, and the kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. The thermodynamic analysis suggested that the adsorption of the organic dyes was endothermic and spontaneous. The modified activated carbon demonstrated acceptable removal efficiency for the two dyes over five cycles.
