Do partnership dissolutions and living alone affect systemic chronic inflammation? A cohort study of Danish adults

Karolina Davidsen et al.

Summary: This study conducted in Denmark investigated the association between accumulated numbers of divorces/partnership breakups or years lived alone and levels of inflammation. The results showed a strong association between years lived alone or accumulated number of partnership breakups and low-grade inflammation for middle-aged men, but not for women. There was no evidence of partnership breakups and educational level having a joint effect for either gender.

Mediating role of instrumental activities of daily living ability on cognitive function of older adults living alone A 4-year longitudinal study from the Kasama study

Keisuke Fujii et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of living alone on cognitive function in older adults, with a focus on the mediating effect of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) ability. The results showed that older individuals living alone had a lower risk of cognitive decline compared to those living with others, and that IADL ability played a crucial role in mediating this relationship. Enhancing IADL abilities through health support could be beneficial for maintaining good cognitive function in older adults living alone.

Endocrine and immunomodulatory effects of social isolation and loneliness across adulthood

Samuele Zilioli et al.

Summary: Most existing studies did not consider the simultaneous impact of social isolation and loneliness on biological outcomes. The research found that living status and frequency of social contacts were associated with daily cortisol secretion and markers of systemic inflammation. Loneliness and social isolation have unique and independent effects on endocrine and immune systems, despite being linked.

GRADE guidelines 32: GRADE offers guidance on choosing targets of GRADE certainty of evidence ratings

Linan Zeng et al.

Summary: This study provides practical principles and examples to help GRADE users make optimal choices regarding their ratings of certainty of evidence using a minimally or partially contextualized approach. Systematic review and health technology assessment authors need to clarify their target of certainty rating, which depends on contextualization, thresholds, and estimate location. GRADE offers guidance for specifying the target of certainty of evidence rating.
