Structural health monitoring (SHM) and Nondestructive testing (NDT) of slender masonry structures: A practical review

Francisco J. Pallares et al.

Summary: The scientific community is actively working on proposing reliable analysis methodologies and non-invasive investigation technologies to assess the current state of conservation of historic buildings and to confirm their ability to resist future threats. The focus is on preserving invaluable cultural heritage through suitable structural assessment techniques, with attention paid to monitoring structural health using advanced technological methods like sensors, wireless connections, and continuous monitoring. Research has shown an increase in papers published on Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and Nondestructive Testing (NDT) of masonry structures, particularly on slender elements in recent years.

Dynamic damage identification for a full-scale parabolic tuff barrel vault under differential settlements of the supports

Anna Castellano et al.

Summary: This study experimentally analyzed the vibration response of a full-scale polycentric near parabolic tuff barrel vault under differential settlements of the abutments. By continuously monitoring the static and dynamic responses of the vault through a large number of sensors, the study used a dynamic damage identification (DDI) procedure to detect, locate, and quantitatively assess the damage. The results showed the effectiveness of the proposed DDI approach in identifying damage and crack hinge positions related to the experimental and theoretical collapse mechanism of the vault.

The Integration of Two Interferometric Radars for Measuring Dynamic Displacement of Bridges

Piotr Olaszek et al.

Summary: This paper presents the application of a set of two interferometric radars to measure vertical vibration and horizontal longitudinal vibration with high accuracy, which was positively verified by experimental tests. The influence of horizontal displacements should be excluded when measuring vertical displacement, and the relationship between horizontal displacements and vertical displacements should be considered when placing radars.
