Study on promoting regeneration of zebrafish skull by phycocyanin characterized by in vivo optical coherence tomography

Xiang Xiang et al.

Summary: In this study, the efficacy of phycocyanin in bone defect repairing was tested on a zebrafish skull defect model, and the evaluating process was monitored in vivo using optical coherence tomography (OCT). The results demonstrated that phycocyanin can effectively repair bone defects, but a high dosage may cause deformation of the skull.

Polarisation-sensitive optical coherence tomography measurement of retardance in fibrosis, a non-invasive biomarker in patients with systemic sclerosis

E. J. Marjanovic et al.

Summary: Polarisation-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) is a promising technique for assessing skin fibrosis in systemic sclerosis (SSc). This study aimed to evaluate retardance as a potential biomarker in SSc. The results showed a correlation between retardance and both histology and skin score data, suggesting that retardance deserves further investigation as a suitable biomarker for SSc-related fibrosis.

Visual Function is Gradually Restored During Retina Regeneration in Adult Zebrafish

Juliane Hammer et al.

Summary: In comparison to mammals, zebrafish have the ability to regenerate organs and tissues. This study focused on the regeneration of visual function in adult zebrafish after light-induced retinal damage. The researchers found that visual function was impaired initially, but gradually restored over time in a gradual manner, with easier visual conditions recovering earlier than more demanding conditions.

Single-shot Mueller-matrix imaging of zebrafish tissues: In vivo analysis of developmental and pathological features

Alexander Machikhin et al.

Summary: Zebrafish is an established animal model for developmental and disease studies. Its optical transparency allows for tissue visualization and interaction with polarized light provides information on tissue structure and properties. Researchers used real-time Mueller-matrix imaging to study zebrafish embryos and found that the angle and degree of linearly polarized light changed drastically during hatching and the spatial distribution of light depolarization features indicated skeletal disorders.

Summary: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a clinical diagnostic 3D imaging modality that has been successful in various fields. However, OCT has limitations that restrict its use as a 3D microscopy tool. In this paper, a computational extension of OCT called 3D optical coherence refraction tomography (OCRT) is introduced, which provides resolution-enhanced and noise-reduced 3D reconstructions.

Summary: An automatic algorithm combining ellipsoid approximation and U-net is presented in this study for the characterization of a zebrafish's yolk sac. The algorithm utilizes polarization-difference-balanced-detection image obtained from orthogonal-polarization-gating optical coherence tomography to segment the yolk sac region. An ellipsoid can be used to approximate the shape of the yolk sac and multiple parameters are used to quantify its volume and principal axes.

Antonia Lichtenegger et al.

Summary: Breast cancer is a leading cause of death in females worldwide, and further research is needed to understand its development mechanisms and find new therapies. The zebrafish model, especially in oncology, has shown promise for pre-clinical research and precision-based medicine. This study utilized a juvenile xenograft zebrafish model and Jones matrix optical coherence tomography (JM-OCT) to investigate tumor growth. The findings demonstrate the potential of JM-OCT as a non-invasive, label-free, three-dimensional, high-resolution, and tissue-specific imaging tool in pre-clinical cancer research using zebrafish models.

Ablation of mpeg plus Macrophages Exacerbates mfrp-Related Hyperopia

Zachary J. Brandt et al.

Summary: The genetic inactivation of the mfrp gene leads to hyperopia and abnormal accumulation of macrophages in the retina.
