Universal van der Waals Force between Heavy Polarons in Superfluids

Keisuke Fujii et al.

Summary: We investigate the long-range behavior of the induced Casimir interaction between two spinless heavy impurities, or polarons, in superfluid cold atomic gases. With the help of effective field theory of a Galilean invariant superfluid, we show that the induced impurity-impurity potential at long distance universally shows a relativistic van der Waals-like attraction resulting from the exchange of two superfluid phonons. We also clarify finite temperature effects from the same two-phonon exchange process.

Light-induced topological superconductivity in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers

Aleksi Julku et al.

Summary: It is demonstrated that electrons interacting with a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of exciton-polaritons can realize a two-dimensional topological p(x) + ip(y) superconductor. This is caused by an attractive interaction mediated by the BEC, which overcompensates the repulsive Coulomb interaction between the electrons. The hybrid light-matter nature of the BEC is crucial for achieving this.

Summary: This paper examines strong boson-impurity interactions with finite range in a Bose gas. It shows that for attractive impurity-boson interactions, including the unitary point, static properties of a Bose polaron in a dilute Bose gas can be calculated using the scattering length and an additional parameter characterizing the range of the interactions.

Repulsive Fermi and Bose Polarons in Quantum Gases

Summary: This article provides an overview of the current theoretical and experimental understanding of the properties of repulsive polarons, which are quasiparticles formed by coupling a mobile impurity to the elementary excitations of a many-particle background. The study of these quasiparticles is important for understanding various quantum many-body systems in ultracold atomic gases and in the solid state. The article also highlights unresolved issues that deserve further investigation.

Counterflow dynamics of two correlated impurities immersed in a bosonic gas

Friethjof Theel et al.

Summary: We investigate the dynamics of two correlated impurities in a double well coupled to a one-dimensional bosonic medium. By studying the entanglement between the impurities and the medium, as well as the impurities' two-body correlations, we determine the ground-state phase diagram of the system. Our results show that the impurity structures and the intervals of existence strongly depend on the interactions between the impurities and the external confinement of the medium.

Bose polaron and the Efimov effect: A Gaussian-state approach

Arthur Christianen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of Efimov correlations in many-body systems by considering a light impurity immersed in a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and forming a Bose polaron. The researchers find that the Efimov effect leads to cooperative binding of bosons to the impurity, resulting in the formation of large clusters with energies significantly below the polaron energy. They also show that the polaron is a metastable excited state that can decay into these clusters.

Ultra-Dilute Gas of Polarons in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Luis A. Pena Ardila

Summary: This study investigates the properties of a dilute gas of impurities embedded in an ultracold gas of bosons that forms a Bose-Einstein condensate. The focus is on the equation of state of the impurity gas at zero temperature and the interaction between impurities mediated by the host bath. Perturbative field-theory approaches and non-perturbative techniques are used for weak and strong interactions, respectively. The findings agree with experimental observations for an ultra dilute gas of impurities, but systematic deviations are observed as the density of impurities increases compared to the one-body Bose polaron problem.

Dynamical Quantum Cherenkov Transition of Fast Impurities in Quantum Liquids

Kushal Seetharam et al.

Summary: This study explores the dynamics of a finite mass impurity injected into a three-dimensional quantum Bose fluid, revealing a transition in the dynamics as the impurity's velocity crosses a critical value. The two regimes differ not only in the character of the impurity velocity abatement, but also exhibit qualitative differences in various aspects such as the Loschmidt echo, density ripples, and momentum distribution of scattered bosonic particles. The transition, a manifestation of a dynamical quantum Cherenkov effect, could be experimentally observable with ultracold atoms using various techniques such as Ramsey interferometry and time-of-flight imaging.

Non-equilibrium quantum dynamics and formation of the Bose polaron

Magnus G. Skou et al.

Summary: Advancing our understanding of non-equilibrium phenomena in quantum many-body systems remains a major challenge in physics. The experimental observation of the non-equilibrium dynamics of a quantum impurity immersed in a bosonic environment reveals a systematic picture of polaron formation and provides a link between few-body processes and many-body dynamics. The measurements demonstrate universal dynamical behavior in interacting many-body systems and offer new pathways to study non-equilibrium quantum phenomena.

Attractive and Repulsive Exciton-Polariton Interactions Mediated by an Electron Gas

Miguel A. Bastarrachea-Magnani et al.

Summary: This study explores the strong photon-photon interactions in a solid-state setting using a microscopic many-body theory, revealing the attractive interactions between polaritons mediated by particle-hole excitations in an electron gas. The interactions between trions and polaritons mediated by electron exchange can be either repulsive or attractive, presenting promising prospects for nonlinear optical components. The mediated interactions, intrinsic to the quasiparticles, can be over an order of magnitude stronger than direct polariton-polariton interactions in the absence of an electron gas.

Ionic polaron in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Grigory E. Astrakharchik et al.

Summary: The authors investigate the behavior of an ionic impurity in a weakly interacting gas of bosonic atoms and identify two main phases of a polaronic regime and a strongly correlated state with many bosons bound to the ion under weak interactions. The presence of strong interactions in a many-body quantum system can lead to exotic effects, and the competition of length scales in a simple setup can give rise to a highly correlated mesoscopic state. The findings are relevant to experiments using hybrid atom-ion setups in the ultracold regime, showing vastly different polaronic properties compared to neutral quantum impurities.

Polaron Interactions and Bipolarons in One-Dimensional Bose Gases in the Strong Coupling Regime

M. Will et al.

Summary: The article presents a detailed study of heavy polarons in a one-dimensional Bose gas using a nonperturbative theory and exact numerical simulations. Analytic approaches for weak boson-boson interactions and strong impurity-boson couplings were developed, and the interaction potential of heavy polarons was found to deviate substantially from the exponential form in the strong coupling limit. Calculations of bipolaron binding energies for low impurity-boson mass ratios were in excellent agreement with quantum Monte Carlo results, taking into account Born-Huang corrections.

Quench Dynamics of the Ideal Bose Polaron at Zero and Nonzero Temperatures

Summary: This study provides a detailed account of a stationary impurity in an ideal Bose-Einstein condensate, known as the ideal Bose polaron. It is found that even with perfectly coherent dynamics, the system thermalizes for negative scattering length. The research also shows that the contact is not bounded at unitarity as long as a condensate exists.

Mobile impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate and the orthogonality catastrophe

Nils-Eric Guenther et al.

Summary: Research shows that in a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate, the quasiparticle residue of an impurity exponentially vanishes with increasing particle number, leading to an orthogonality catastrophe. By introducing a variational ansatz, it is possible to accurately describe the macroscopic dressing of mobile impurities, including their feedback onto the BEC and boson-boson repulsion beyond the Bogoliubov approximation. Furthermore, the prediction is made that the orthogonality catastrophe also occurs in the mobile case when the BEC becomes ideal, and experimental results have confirmed the accuracy of the ansatz.
