PATOKA: Simulating Electromagnetic Observables of Black Hole Accretion

George N. Wong et al.

Summary: The article describes the analysis of reconstructed images of millimeter emission near the supermassive black hole in the center of the M87 galaxy by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). The analysis utilized a synthetic black hole image and spectrum library produced through numerical simulations and polarized ray tracing. The article provides a detailed description of the PATOKA pipeline used to generate the simulation library, as well as an overview of the numerical codes iharm, ipole, and igrmonty. The simulated data produced by PATOKA are briefly introduced, and limitations and future directions are discussed.

GRRMHD simulations of MAD accretion discs declining from super-Eddington to sub-Eddington accretion rates

Brandon Curd et al.

Summary: In this study, we used simulations to investigate magnetically arrested discs (MADs) around non-spinning and spinning supermassive black holes (BHs). We found that spinning BHs produce stronger jets and are able to extract more energy from the BH compared to non-spinning BHs. The power of the jets decreases with decreasing accretion rate, while the total and radiative efficiencies increase.

Formation of Magnetically Truncated Accretion Disks in 3D Radiation-transport Two-temperature GRMHD Simulations

M. T. P. Liska et al.

Summary: Multiwavelength observations suggest that the accretion disk in X-ray binaries and active galactic nucleus transitions from a cold, thin disk to a hot, thick flow near the black hole. However, the formation, structure, and dynamics of truncated disks are poorly understood. This study presents the first radiation-transport two-temperature general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of truncated disks, providing insights into the transition from a thin disk to a two-phase medium of cold gas clumps and a hot corona.

A Mildly Relativistic Outflow Launched Two Years after Disruption in Tidal Disruption Event AT2018hyz

Y. Cendes et al.

Summary: In this article, late-time radio/millimeter (as well as optical/UV and X-ray) detections of the tidal disruption event AT2018hyz are presented. The study reveals the existence of a delayed mildly relativistic outflow and finds that the energy and velocity of this outflow are intermediate between nonrelativistic TDEs and relativistic TDEs.

Dynamical Unification of Tidal Disruption Events

Lars L. Thomsen et al.

Summary: The observed tidal disruption events (TDEs) show a wide range of emission properties, both at peak and over their lifetimes. In this study, simulations and radiative transfer calculations are used to investigate the unified model proposed by Dai et al. The results confirm that the observed emission largely depends on the viewing angle of the observer with respect to the disk orientation. Additionally, it is found that higher accretion rates result in increased reprocessing of high-energy radiation, thus augmenting the optical-to-X-ray flux ratio.

Evaluation of New Submillimeter VLBI Sites for the Event Horizon Telescope

Alexander W. Raymond et al.

Summary: The study investigates candidate sites for an expanded EHT array with improved imaging capabilities using historical meteorology and radiative transfer analysis. Approximately half of the new locations analyzed have 230 GHz opacity comparable to existing EHT sites, and at least 17 of the candidate sites would be comparably good for 345 GHz observing.

Tidal Disruption Events

Suvi Gezari

Summary: The concept of stars being torn apart and consumed by massive black holes in galaxies fascinated theorists in the late 1970s. Observational evidence for these rare events emerged in the 1990s with the soft X-ray ROSAT All-Sky Survey and has accelerated with advancements in optical time domain surveys. Multiwavelength observations of TDEs have revealed panchromatic emission from different spatial scales, providing important clues to the powering mechanisms of the components.

Global simulations of tidal disruption event disc formation via stream injection in GRRMHD

Brandon Curd

Summary: The study simulated accretion disc formation resulting from tidal disruption of a solar mass star around a supermassive black hole using KORAL code. The rate of circularization of the disc is faster for pericenter radii closer to the black hole, with mildly super-Eddington radiation and highly asymmetric photosphere. The simulations suggest tidal disruption events should be radiatively inefficient.
