Institutional investor motivation, processes, and expectations for sustainable building investment

Pernille H. Christensen et al.

Summary: The study explores the strategic motivations, processes, and expectations of institutional real estate owners regarding sustainable improvements and eco-labelling in office buildings. Findings show that financial outcomes are prioritized over environmental concerns when making decisions related to sustainability. The perceived value of eco-labelling is widespread in the industry, with data collection and benchmarking related to energy and water usage becoming the new norm for institutional managers and investors.

Using GEOBIA and Vegetation Indices to Assess Small Urban Green Areas in Two Climatic Regions

Ana Maria Popa et al.

Summary: The importance of small urban green areas has increased due to rapid urbanization and densification of urban tissue. This study proposes a method using high-resolution satellite images and vegetation indices for time-series analysis of small urban green areas in Bucharest, Romania and Athens, Greece. The results show high accuracy in extracting green areas and consistency in location over time. The proposed method provides valuable insights into the distribution and quality of small urban green areas and can be applied to various analyses that are currently limited by poor spatial resolution.

Urban sprawl into Natura 2000 network over Europe

Elena D. Concepcion

Summary: Urban growth poses a major threat to global biodiversity conservation, particularly when it encroaches into high conservation value areas. While urban cover inside Natura 2000 is lower than outside, the growth rates are slightly higher, indicating early signs of urban sprawl within the network. Sites most affected by urbanization are those surrounded by densely populated areas with fewer conservation concern species or habitats.

Assessing the effectiveness of protected areas against habitat fragmentation and loss: A long-term multi-scalar analysis in a mediterranean region

Jesus Santiago-Ramos et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the effectiveness of Protected Areas in reducing habitat loss and fragmentation in a South West European context. It finds that while PAs have limited impact on habitat loss, they play an important role in addressing habitat fragmentation. Loss of habitat continuity is mainly found in non-protected areas, and small losses of natural cover in key areas outside of PAs can significantly increase habitat fragmentation at the regional scale. Improved ecological connections between large PAs and proactive landscape planning in non-protected environments are recommended based on the study results.

Dynamics of Open Green Areas in Polish and Romanian Cities during 2006-2018: Insights for Spatial Planners

Alexandru-Ionut Petrisor et al.

Summary: Studying green urban infrastructure is crucial for ecosystem services, climate change mitigation, urban development, and citizen welfare. Research findings showed that open green areas in Polish and Romanian cities have been lost and fragmented due to factors such as urban development, population density, and construction activities. Planners should focus on preserving urban greenery, city managers need targeted policies, and scientists can develop planning manuals to support these efforts.
