Road network drives urban ecosystems-a longitudinal analysis of impact of roads in the central Himalaya

Deepika Mann et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatio-temporal impact of road networks on urban ecosystem dynamics by analyzing the composition and configuration of land use land cover and land surface temperatures. The results suggest a positive association between road network and built-up land, with higher concentration of built-up land closer to the road network. The increase in grey infrastructure has led to a significant rise in maximum land surface temperatures along primary and tertiary roads. These findings will provide a baseline for examining the influence of road network on regional urban growth and assist in planning sustainable road infrastructure.

Modelling the spatial impact of regional planning and climate change prevention strategies on land consumption in the Rhine-Ruhr Metropolitan Area 2017-2030

Andreas Rienow et al.

Summary: Urban sprawl is a complex issue with various driving forces and impacts on human and natural systems. This study focuses on the Rhine-Ruhr Metropolitan Area in Germany and uses satellite data to analyze land use and temperature to investigate the effects of future land consumption and population growth on the climate. The study also evaluates the spatial impact of planning policies on land use and climate change prevention. The findings suggest that regional planning in the study area does not have a positive effect on interregional land consumption and climate change prevention.

Toward SDGs: Forest, Market and Human Wellbeing Nexus in Indian Western Himalayas

Pariva Dobriyal et al.

Summary: The study found that households located near forests scored higher on wellbeing indicators as they have better access to forest resources and freshwater, providing alternatives to market and agricultural products. Access to less-degraded resources also allows households to have wild fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants, enhancing their food and health security. The combination of climate change, declining forest resources, and market-based economy expansion is leading to shifts in traditional cropping patterns and making local people vulnerable to diseases and hunger.

Analyzing Variations in Size and Intensities in Land Use Dynamics for Sustainable Land Use Management: A Case of the Coastal Landscapes of South-Western Ghana

Evelyn Asante-Yeboah et al.

Summary: Land use/land cover change (LULCC) studies are important for understanding the impacts on natural ecosystems and livelihoods. A study conducted in the coastal landscape of south-western Ghana found that rubber and settlement expansions were the main drivers of landscape changes, leading to negative effects on arable lands and local food security.

Adopting a governance lens to address urban risks in the Uttarakhand Himalayas: The case of Almora, India

Neelakshi Joshi

Summary: The Indian Himalayan State of Uttarakhand is experiencing challenges in urban development, with a lack of municipal capacity to address disaster risks. Research shows that most households rely on informal building professionals who lack formal training and accountability in addressing risk.Governance of risk presents a viable alternative, but needs to consider the role of informal building professionals and their risk knowledge and practices.

Impacts of Landscape Patterns on Ecosystem Services Value: A Multiscale Buffer Gradient Analysis Approach

Wanxu Chen et al.

Summary: The study showed that rapid urbanization in Wuhan has led to significant changes in landscape patterns, with landscape pattern metrics exhibiting significant spatial heterogeneity. During the study period, the ecosystem services value in Wuhan steadily declined. Landscape pattern metrics exerted a significant influence on ecosystem services value, but this influence varied greatly.

Linking landscape pattern, ecosystem service value, and human well-being in Xishuangbanna, southwest China: Insights from a coupling coordination model

Zheneng Hu et al.

Summary: The study in Xishuangbanna region demonstrated the close relationship between landscape pattern, ecosystem service value, and human well-being. Over time, there was a decrease in forest area, fragmentation of landscape pattern, and a decline in ESV, while human well-being continued to improve.
