Synanthropisation of coastal vegetation in southern Spain

Alvaro Enriquez de Salamanca

Summary: Coastal dunes in southern Spain are facing physical destruction and synanthropisation, primarily influenced by the colonization of alien and apophyte species. The study reveals that 51% of the vegetation in the area is synanthropic, with 33% being ruderal species and 18% being alien species from adjacent gardens. The degree of synanthropisation varies among habitats, with the back dune being the most affected at 63%. While habitats with higher synanthropisation show greater richness and diversity, they also exhibit lower naturalness. Measures must be implemented to protect coastal vegetation from destruction and invasive species.

Invasive Species as Rivals: Invasive Potential and Distribution Pattern of Xanthium strumarium L.

Rafi Ullah et al.

Summary: Xanthium strumarium is a globally successful invasive herb with significant negative impacts on ecology, economy, and society. The study in northern Pakistan evaluated the invasive potential and spatial distribution patterns of X. strumarium, finding that high temperature and drought stress could determine population growth at lower elevations, while colder climates with adequate moisture are linked to reduced populations at higher elevations. Soil silt and available water were key factors associated with X. strumarium-invaded communities, with different invasive species responding similarly to these factors.

Patterns of Seed Dispersal in Coastal Dune Plant Communities

Tommaso Valdesolo et al.

Summary: Seed dispersal plays a crucial role in species distribution and assembly. This study examined the link between seed dispersal patterns and coexisting species in a plant community. The findings suggest that seasonal differentiation in seed dispersal may have a greater impact on species assembly than dispersal vectors.

Functional responses to climate change may increase invasive potential of Carpobrotus edulis

Josefina G. Campoy et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of climate change on the ecophysiological performance of Carpobrotus edulis, a South African plant, and found that expected climate changes may further promote its invasion. Invasive populations showed differences in survival and functional traits compared to native populations, supporting the invasiveness hypothesis.

Getting the measure of the biodiversity crisis in Mediterranean coastal habitats

Marta Gaia Sperandii et al.

Summary: This study reveals large, often non-random, taxonomic and functional changes occurring in Mediterranean coastal dune plant communities in a surprisingly short time-span. It highlights the severe shifts in community structure and ecological strategies in different habitat types, indicating intense degradation processes in these habitats. The findings also provide crucial information for directing future conservation efforts and management, emphasizing the urgent need to further investigate the potential drivers of these changes.

Identifying thresholds in the impacts of an invasive groundcover on native vegetation

Luke S. O'Loughlin et al.

Summary: The study found that the impact of the non-native herbaceous groundcover T. fluminensis on a temperate rainforest community of southern Australia is non-linear. The native plant community exhibited negative exponential relationships with increasing T. fluminensis volume, but negative threshold relationships with increasing T. fluminensis cover. The results suggest that the diversity of the native rainforest community can be maintained where T. fluminensis is present at moderate-to-low cover levels.

Alien plant invasions in Mediterranean habitats: an assessment for Sicily

Riccardo Guarino et al.

Summary: The study compared the levels of vascular plant invasion in different habitats and plant communities of Sicily, revealing that annual and woody species dominate the alien flora in the region, with alien species having longer flowering periods than native species. Different habitats varied significantly in their level of invasion by alien species, with most habitats having few or no aliens present, except for specific coastal areas, riverbeds, and synanthropic habitats. The number of alien species present in a habitat does not necessarily correspond to the severity of the impact of invasion in that habitat.

Summary: The study aimed to predict the establishment and invasion probability of Oenothera stucchii in xerophilous grasslands, identifying factors such as human disturbance, recipient community attributes, and environmental factors influencing its presence and abundance patterns. The results provided insights on spatial patterns and susceptibility of grey dune habitats to invasion, offering cost-effective measures for prevention and providing a model applicable to related congener species sharing similar traits.

Summary: The study predicted the potential distribution of the invasive plant Xanthium italicum using the Maxent model, showing that its distribution is expected to shrink in future climate scenarios due to global climate change and human intervention. The research found that temperature, precipitation, and other environmental factors have a significant impact on the geographical distribution of X. italicum.
