Does ENSO strongly affect rice yield and water application in Northeast China?

Erjing Guo et al.

Summary: Northeast China has become one of the largest commercial rice production regions in China, but the competition for fresh water with non-agricultural sectors threatens national food security. Alternate wetting and drying (AWD) management significantly reduces water application and could be a water-saving technology to address the challenge of increasing water demand from non-agriculture sectors in the future.

Cotton farmers' adaptation to arid climates: Waiting times to adopt water-saving technology

Qiao Mi et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the impact of capital endowment on Xinjiang cotton farmers' adoption of water-saving irrigation technology, finding that capital endowment significantly affects cotton farmers' willingness, decisions, and wait time for adopting such technology. Factors such as neighbors' adoption decisions, policy subsidies, and cooperative membership can reduce cotton farmers' wait times, while land transfer and rental are livelihood strategies used by cotton farmers to adjust to arid climate conditions.

Water scarcity and adoption of water-saving irrigation technologies in groundwater over-exploited areas in the North China Plain

Kunlin Yuan et al.

Summary: This study found that water scarcity levels and other factors of farm households influence their decisions to adopt traditional or modern water-saving technologies. Factors like farm size and membership significantly affect the adoption of WSTs in poorly endowed households, while other factors impact all types of households. Different factors affect the adoption of traditional furrow irrigation and modern underground pipes, such as family labor significantly influencing furrow irrigation and information quality and labor-saving potential being associated with underground pipes.

Factors affecting sustained adoption of irrigation water-saving technologies in groundwater over-exploited areas in the North China Plain

Shuhong Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that water scarcity plays a significant role in adoption and sustained adoption of water-saving technologies in households in the North China Plain. Membership in cooperative organizations significantly improves the likelihood of sustained adoption, while the number of plots negatively affects sustained adoption.
