Soil loss estimation and prioritization using geographic information systems and the RUSLE model: a case study of the Anger River Sub-basin, Western Ethiopia

Mitiku Badasa Moisa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify soil erosion hotspot areas and prioritize conservation planning in the Anger River Sub-basin using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation model and geospatial technologies. The results showed that soil erosion was severe in the sub-basin, particularly in the mid- and upstream areas and steeper parts. This research provides evidence for decision-making in soil and water conservation practices and emphasizes the need for further research at the micro-watershed scale to mitigate the impact of soil erosion on watershed health and sustainability.

Land use/land cover change analysis using geospatial techniques: a case of Geba watershed, western Ethiopia

Mitiku Badasa Moisa et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the land use/land cover change in the Geba watershed in southwestern Ethiopia over the past thirty years using geospatial technologies. The results showed a significant increase in agricultural land and a decline in dense forest. The findings emphasize the importance of sustainable land use planning and management in the study area.

Drivers and Implications of Land Cover Dynamics in Muger Sub-Basin, Abay Basin, Ethiopia

Dawit Samuel Teshome et al.

Summary: This study examined the dynamics and driving forces of land cover change (LCC) from 1986 to 2020 in the Muger sub-basin, Ethiopia, using a combination of remotely sensed data, field interviews, and observations. The results showed a decline in forest cover and wetland, while cultivated land, built-up areas, shrubland, and water bodies increased. Population growth and poor agricultural practices were identified as the main causes of LCC. Therefore, implementing comprehensive and integrated basin management policies and strategies is crucial for ensuring sustainable development.

Spatial distribution of soil erosion and sediment yield in the Koshi River Basin, Nepal: a case study of Triyuga watershed

Belayneh Yigez et al.

Summary: High elevation and steep slope class in the northwestern and northeastern parts of the watershed are the major hotspot sites for soil loss and sediment yield. Effective conservation interventions are needed in these vulnerable areas to mitigate the impacts of soil erosion and sedimentation in the Triyuga river watershed.

Impact of land-use and land-cover change on soil erosion using the RUSLE model and the geographic information system: a case of Temeji watershed, Western Ethiopia

Mitiku Badasa Moisa et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of land-use change on soil erosion in the Temeji watershed, finding that the conversion of grassland and forest into cultivated land leads to high soil loss, and over-exploitation of forest and grasslands for agricultural purposes is directly related to the severity of soil loss.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of land use/land cover change on soil erosion and sediment yield in the Sebeya watershed of Rwanda from 1990 to 2019. The results showed a significant influence of LULC change on soil erosion and sediment yield, especially with cropland causing severe erosion.
