A reduced-order model of the spine to study pediatric scoliosis

Sunder Neelakantan et al.

Summary: In this study, a simplified model was used to simulate the deformation of S-shaped rods under mechanical loading and distinct axial projection patterns were identified. It was found that rods deforming in a Loop1 shape had the highest inflection point and smaller curvature, while rods deforming in the Loop2 shape had the lowest inflection point and higher curvature, matching common clinically observed scoliotic curves-Lenke 1 and Lenke 5.

Finite element analysis of the lumbar spine in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis subjected to different loads

Qiaolin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explored the biomechanical changes of the lumbar spine segment of idiopathic scoliosis under different loads by simulating six kinds of lumbar spine motions based on a three-dimensional finite element (FE) model. The results showed that in patients with AIS, the range of motion (ROM) is reduced under all loads, and different loads of AIS cause corresponding changes in the force and displacement of different positions of the vertebral body or intervertebral discs. The stress on the lumbar vertebrae comprising the greatest curvature is the most excessive, with the intervertebral disc being more likely to be injured under rotating load.

Accounting for Biomechanical Measures from Musculoskeletal Simulation of Upright Posture Does Not Enhance the Prediction of Curve Progression in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

Tito Bassani et al.

Summary: A major clinical challenge in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the difficulty of predicting curve progression at initial presentation. While previous research has focused on geometric parameters of the spine and descriptors of scoliotic curves, the contribution of biomechanical measurements was neglected, and ultimately did not enhance the prediction of curve progression.

Sagittal curvature of the spine as a predictor of the pediatric spinal deformity development

Saba Pasha et al.

Summary: In a population with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, analysis of the geometrical parameters of sagittal spinal curves can help predict the risk of scoliosis development and differentiate between different deformity patterns. Factors such as the pre-scoliotic position of the inflection point, ratio of spinal curvatures above and below the inflection point, and length of the spinal curve above and below the inflection point are significantly associated with scoliosis development.
