This paper aims to provide new theoretical and methodological insights in the study of simile, extended simile, and allegory using Relevance theory. Lastly, the framework is applied to analyze extended simile in Luis Goytisolo's Antagonia. We argue that the prevalence of this rhetorical figure reflects the novel's key theme that writing is an unsuccessful attempt to make sense of the chaotic world.
This paper mainly aims to provide new theoretical and methodological insights in the study of simile, extended simile, and allegory with the support of Relevance theory. Lastly, this framework is applied to the analysis of extended simile in Luis Goytisolo's Antagonia. We consider that the widespread presence of this rhetorical figure reflects one of the most important features of the novel: writing is always an unsuccessful attempt to give a meaning to the chaotic world where characters live.
