Pandemic-related financial hardship and disparities in sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and purchasing among San Francisco Bay Area residents during COVID-19

Richard Pulvera et al.

Summary: Some reports suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to unhealthier diets, including increased consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). This study conducted surveys in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA, and found that individuals facing financial hardship during the pandemic were more likely to consume SSBs daily and purchase regular soda more frequently compared to those not facing new financial hardship. These findings highlight the potential impact of economic inequality on unhealthy behaviors and emphasize the need to improve emergency food systems to mitigate the effects of public health crises.

Psychological distress and its association with intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, discretionary foods, and alcohol in women during the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia

Jessica A. Grieger et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the relationship between psychological distress, lifestyle, demographic factors, and discretionary choices in women of reproductive age during the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia. The results showed that women with high psychological distress and those who gained weight during the pandemic were more likely to consume discretionary foods frequently. There was no association between psychological distress and sugar-sweetened beverages or alcohol, but Australian, New Zealander, or Pacific Islander background and longer sitting time were associated with higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. Older age, higher household income, and moderate or high physical activity were associated with higher alcohol intake.

Summary: This study investigated the potential relationship between Macronutrients' quality and mental health and quality of life among Iranian adults. The results showed that higher protein quality index (PQI) was associated with lower risk of depressive symptoms and low-quality life. However, carbohydrate quality index (CQI) and fat quality index (FQI) were not related to depressive and anxiety symptoms.

Summary: Studies have shown associations between dietary factors and anxiety symptoms or disorder prevalence, such as a decrease in anxiety with more fruits and vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids, and healthy dietary patterns, and an increase in anxiety with high-fat diet and high intake of sugar. Results are limited by a high percentage of animal and observational studies.

Summary: This study found that moderate low carbohydrate intake increased the duration and proportion of N3 sleep stage, while high carbohydrate intake prolonged rapid eye movement (REM) stage duration. The changes in both quantity and quality of carbohydrates significantly impacted sleep onset latency and sleep continuation measures, indicating the need for further research on the effects of long-term carbohydrate interventions on sleep.

Sleep and Diet: Mounting Evidence of a Cyclical Relationship

Faris M. Zuraikat et al.

Summary: The two intrinsic factors in health, diet and sleep, are interconnected as insufficient sleep can negatively impact dietary intakes, while specific foods rich in tryptophan and melatonin can improve sleep quality. Adopting a healthful diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and other sources of dietary tryptophan and melatonin can lead to favorable sleep outcomes. Clinical trials are necessary to confirm the causal impact of dietary patterns on sleep and to elucidate underlying mechanisms, but available data demonstrate a cyclical relationship between these lifestyle factors.
