Assessment of seismic design provisions for confined masonry using experimental and numerical approaches

Bonisha Borah et al.

Summary: Confined Masonry (CM) buildings are popular in many countries for their simple construction method, affordability, and effectiveness in seismic resistance. However, seismic design codes for CM are still in development, with gaps that need to be addressed. This study evaluated the seismic design provisions for CM walls by designing and testing different aspect ratios, highlighting the importance of aspect ratio in cracking and damage initiation. Finite element analysis was used to simulate the behavior of specimens and compare design vs actual lateral strength assessments from different codes, indicating a need for further improvement in design provisions for CM buildings globally.

Numerical modeling of confined brick masonry structures with parametric analysis and energy absorption calculation

H. Asfandyar Ahmed et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new modeling methodology for numerical analysis of full-scale confined brick masonry structures, using different modeling strategies for in-plane and out-of-plane walls to investigate damage mechanisms and load transfer. A parametric study is conducted to explore the impact of brick and mortar properties on structural response, with significant changes observed in structural response metrics due to variations in material properties. The proposed hybrid modeling approach provides accurate predictions of lateral load behavior and damage mechanisms of confined brick masonry structures under lateral loading.
