Suicides of Psychologists and Other Health Professionals: National Violent Death Reporting System Data, 2003-2018

Summary: This study examines suicide rates among psychologists using a national database. The results reveal that between 2003 and 2018, 159 psychologists died by suicide, with males accounting for 64% of the decedents. In 2018, psychologist suicide deaths were estimated to comprise 4.9% of suicides among selected health professions. The findings highlight the importance of improving suicide prevention efforts for psychologists, mental health, and other health professionals.
