Community perceptions of gendered alcohol misuse in a food insecure context: The case of northwestern Benin

Summary: Research in the Atacora region of Benin has revealed that farmers misuse alcohol in response to persistent food insecurity, with gendered drinking behaviors and a rigid division of labor roles contributing to the issue. This alcohol misuse undermines farm labor, diverts household resources, and worsens food insecurity, while also contributing to intimate partner violence according to women's reports. Policymakers in Benin need to consider the complex relationship between alcohol misuse and intimate partner violence when implementing food relief policies and programs.

Taking power: Women's empowerment and household Well-being in Sub-Saharan Africa

Summary: This study explores the impact of women's power relative to their husbands on women's health, reproductive outcomes, children's health, and children's education in 23 Sub-Saharan African countries. The findings suggest that recognizing women's power leads to better well-being outcomes for women and children. However, when women take more decision-making power for themselves, it can have positive effects on reproductive and children's health but negative effects on emotional violence.

Continuity and Change: Performing Gender in Rural Tanzania

Summary: The legislation for women's rights in Tanzania is considered progressive, but implementation issues and essentialist discourse on gender equality still persist. A study involving 144 women and 144 men in rural communities revealed discrepancies between local discourse and practice, with sanctions threatening gender renegotiation. Everyday life in Tanzania involves continuous performance, reproduction, and renegotiation of gender roles within limited cultural and economic options.

Gender performativity in rural northern Ghana: implications for transnational feminist theorising

Summary: This article draws on theories of gender performativity and postcolonial African feminisms to explore femininities in the rural context of northern Ghana. Through participant observation fieldwork among the Dagaaba community, the author demonstrates a resonance between performativity theories of gender and Dagaaba constructions of gender identities and power relations. By focusing on heteronormative marriage practices, the article diverges from Butlerian theories of gender performativity to participate in acts of cultural translation between Western and West African settings.
