Environmental expertise for social transformation: roles and responsibilities for social science

From inclusion to epistemic belonging in international environmental expertise: learning from the institutionalisation of scenarios and models in IPBES

Summary: Including diverse perspectives in environmental expertise has become a major concern, but questions remain about the effectiveness of this inclusion. This paper argues that enabling inclusion in international expert organisations can be supported by facilitating epistemic belonging through mutual recognition and mobilisation of material resources. The institutionalization of biodiversity scenarios and models in IPBES is used as an example to show how expert communities must reshape their resource environments to achieve epistemic belonging.
