Similarity and difference between aging and puncture-induced intervertebral disc degeneration

Shuangjun He et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in micromorphology and mechanical properties of intervertebral discs degeneration induced by aging and puncture. The results showed that the disc height ratio decreased in the PDG and ADG groups, histological scores increased, T2 signal gray value decreased, MMP-3 and TNF-positive cells proportion in intervertebral disc tissues was higher, and COL-2 IOD values were lower. The fiber diameter increased in the ADG group, indicating chronic inflammation, while PDG suffered from severe extracellular matrix loss. These findings provide a foundation for clinical research.

Intradiscal injection for the management of low back pain

Fu Zhang et al.

Summary: Low back pain is a common clinical issue caused by intervertebral disc degeneration. Current treatments are limited due to their inability to address the underlying degeneration. Intradiscal injection therapies have shown benefits in symptomatic relief and disc repair, but there are limitations to consider.

Axial hypersensitivity is associated with aberrant nerve sprouting in a novel model of disc degeneration in female Sprague Dawley rats

David J. Lillyman et al.

Summary: Chronic low back pain is a global socioeconomic crisis, and the lack of effective treatments can be attributed to inadequate models. However, a rigorous rat model of disc degeneration induced through an artificial annular tear has been developed, allowing for a better understanding of the pathobiology and screening of treatments for disc-associated low back pain.

Species variation in the cartilaginous endplate of the lumbar intervertebral disc

Yun-He Li et al.

Summary: This study compared the structure of cartilaginous endplate (CEP) in different species and revealed the integration pattern between CEP and bony endplate (BEP). The results showed significant differences in thickness, cellular density, and collagen characterization of CEPs from different species.

Development of a standardized histopathology scoring system for intervertebral disc degeneration in rat models: An initiative of the ORS spine section

Alon Lai et al.

Summary: A new histology grading system was developed to quantify intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration in different rat models, consisting of eight significant degenerative features. The validation study showed high reproducibility and ability to discern different levels of degenerative changes. A widely-accepted protocol for histological preparation of rat IVD samples was proposed to facilitate comparison across laboratories.
