Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma: Novel molecular insights and clinicopathologic updates

Reza Alaghehbandan et al.

Summary: Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (ChRCC) is the third most common subtype of renal cell carcinoma (RCC), with two main morphological variants. Most ChRCCs have a favorable clinical outcome, but histology alone is limited in predicting their behavior. Classic ChRCCs generally express CD117 and uniform CK7, while the eosinophilic variant shows more heterogeneous CK7 expression. Losses of multiple chromosomes are considered genetic hallmarks of classic and eosinophilic ChRCCs, while gains are associated with sarcomatoid ChRCCs.

Magnetic resonance diffusion kurtosis imaging in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant renal tumors

Jianxiong Fu et al.

Summary: Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) can serve as another noninvasive biomarker for the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant renal tumors. By comparing the values of MD, MK, KA, and RK, different types of renal tumors can be effectively distinguished.

The Role of CK7, S100A1, and CD82 (KAI1) Expression in the Differential Diagnosis of Chromophobe Renal Cell Carcinoma and Renal Oncocytoma

Zeliha B. Sari et al.

Summary: Renal oncocytoma is a benign kidney tumor originating from intercalated cells of collecting ducts, similar to chromophobe RCC. Immunohistochemical markers CK7, S100A1, and CD82 showed statistically significant differences in expression between chromophobe RCC and oncocytoma. The application of a panel consisting of these markers may provide accurate categorization of tumors in difficult cases.

A deep-learning based artificial intelligence (AI) approach for differentiation of clear cell renal cell carcinoma from oncocytoma on multi-phasic MRI

Moozhan Nikpanah et al.

Summary: The study found that the deep convolutional neural network showed high accuracy and reliability in differentiating ccRCC from oncocytoma. The observer study showed moderate agreement between two radiologists and the AI algorithm.

A CT-based radiomics nomogram for differentiation of small masses (<4 cm) of renal oncocytoma from clear cell renal cell carcinoma

Xiaoli Li et al.

Summary: This study developed a radiomics nomogram for preoperative differentiation of RO and ccRCC based on clinical data and radiomics signature, showing promising diagnostic performance. The nomogram could potentially reduce unnecessary surgeries and assist in tailoring precise therapy.
