Theoretical models to evaluate the effect of SiO2 and CaO contents on the long-term compressive strength of cement mortar modified with cement kiln dust (CKD)

Aso A. Abdalla et al.

Summary: Cement kiln dust (CKD), a waste material generated during cement production, can be used as a substitute for Portland cement in construction. This study evaluated the effect of CKD's components on the long-term compressive strength and developed models to predict it. The results showed that increasing SiO2 content increased the strength, while the effect of CaO depended on CKD content.

Optimization and Simulation of Saw Dust Ash Concrete Using Extreme Vertex Design Method

Uzoma Ibe Iro et al.

Summary: This research study adapted a constrained simplex optimization method to evaluate the mechanical properties of green concrete composed of cement and saw dust ash (SDA), a by-product of industrial residue. The study aimed to promote sustainability and control waste disposal by incorporating waste materials into concrete production. The experimental results showed that the compressive and flexural strengths of the green concrete declined linearly with increased SDA content. By using statistical evaluation, optimization techniques, and graphical computations, an EVD model was developed to determine the optimal mixture proportions. The adequacy of the EVD model was validated through simulation and statistical tests, indicating a good correlation between the model-simulated and actual values.

Summary: The study optimized the California bearing ratio (CBR) values of expansive soil treated with cement kiln dust (CKD) and metakaolin (MTK) using the Scheffe optimization method, achieving maximum CBR values and developing CBR models. The statistical analysis confirmed the adequacy of the mathematical models, and SEM and EDX techniques were used to explore morphological and composition variations between natural and optimized soil blends. The observed alterations in soil texture were attributed to the formation of cementitious compounds during the pozzolanic reaction.
