Computational models of cardiac hypertrophy

Kyoko Yoshida et al.

Summary: Cardiac hypertrophy, characterized by increased heart mass, is driven by changes in hemodynamics, mechanical stimuli, and hormonal inputs. Computational models have emerged as a key development in predicting heart growth patterns, with the potential for patient-specific predictions to guide clinical interventions. However, current approaches have limitations in predicting heart growth regression, evolving hemodynamics, and incorporating effects of drugs and hormones, highlighting the need for a multiscale modeling approach to address these challenges in cardiac growth modeling.

Summary: Cardiac fibroblasts play a crucial role in providing support to the heart and are involved in physiological signaling processes, but excessive activation can lead to pathological remodeling. Research is expanding our understanding of cardiac fibroblast activation and their interactions with cardiac myocytes.

Quantitative Evaluation of Cardiac Cell Interactions and Responses to Cyclic Strain

Richard Duc Hien Tran et al.

Summary: The unique cellular composition and complex tissue structure of the heart contribute to its dynamic mechanical environment. Changes in both mechanics and cell composition in pathological heart tissue can influence each other, affecting the overall organization of the tissue. The study suggests that varying densities of cardiomyocytes and fibroblasts play a role in controlling tissue organization, allowing for modeling of healthy and fibrotic heart tissue in vitro.

Engineering aligned human cardiac muscle using developmentally inspired fibronectin micropatterns

Ivan Batalov et al.

Summary: Engineered cardiac two-dimensional tissues with biomimetic micropatterns provide insights into the interactions between cardiomyocytes and cell-ECM, driving cell alignment and organization. Experimental findings suggest that cell density, N-cadherin, involvement of cardiac fibroblasts, and T3 hormone treatment all influence cardiomyocyte alignment. These results are not only significant for engineering anisotropic cardiac tissues in vitro, but also provide valuable insights into factors influencing cardiogenesis in vivo.
