Soil conditioners based on anionic polymer and anionic micro-sized hydrogel: A comparative study

I. G. Panova et al.

Summary: The article discusses the use of novel aqueous polymer formulations to stabilize sand and soil against wind erosion and retain water. Results show that PAA#-based crusts have higher mechanical strength compared to linear PAA, making them more resistant to mechanical loads. The PAA#-based crusts also have a higher water retention capacity and are not affected by high air speeds, making them promising for anti-erosion and water-saving formulations.

Water retention in sandy substrates modified by cross-linked polymeric microgels and their complexes with a linear cationic polymer

Andrey Smagin et al.

Summary: New synthetic soil conditioners in the form of microgel copolymers of N-isopropylacrylamide and acrylic acid (PAA#) and their interpolyelectrolyte complexes (IPEC#) with different surface charges were tested for anti-erosion protection. It was found that PAA# and anionic IPEC# significantly improved water retention and specific surface area for quartz sand and loamy sand, while weakly swelling linear polyacrylic acid and cationic IPEC# had no major impact on properties of both mineral substrates.
