SARS-CoV-2 receptor ACE2 and molecular pathway to enter target cells during infection

Khadijeh Najafi et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the information currently available about the seven HCoVs, with a focus on comparing and contrasting the various HCoVs from a virus evolution and genome recombination perspective. The cause for the angiotensin 2 receptor being an enzyme-converting site is also emphasized. It sheds light on the SARS-CoV-2 and the main entrance pathways into target cells, aiming to help researchers and clinicians develop new methods to diagnose coronavirus infection in a timely and efficient manner.

Covid19 pandemic as a further driver of water scarcity in Africa

Alberto Boretti

Summary: Population growth, economic growth, and declining resources have put the world, especially Africa, on a collision course with a water crisis. The recent United Nations World Water Development Report sheds light on this issue, but fails to propose satisfactory solutions. Without addressing the drivers of water scarcity, regional water crises, starting from Africa, are inevitable in the next few decades. Political, financial, and energy burdens limit the effectiveness of technological advancements in meeting the growing water, food, and energy demands. Additionally, the Covid19 pandemic and its economic repercussions further exacerbate the water crisis, especially in Africa.

SARS-CoV-2 in water services: Presence and impacts

M. Langone et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the presence and persistence of SARS-CoV-2 in water bodies and wastewaters, discusses the potential implications for water services, and presents the potential use of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) assessment. It also provides research questions to guide towards sustainable water management in the event of a SARS-CoV-2 re-emergence or future deadly outbreaks.

Detection and quantification of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater and treated effluents: Surveillance of COVID-19 epidemic in the United Arab Emirates

Shadi W. Hasan et al.

Summary: Testing SARS-CoV-2 viral loads in wastewater in the United Arab Emirates revealed fluctuating levels in different locations, with government precautionary measures correlating with a decrease in viral loads. None of the 11 wastewater treatment plants' effluents tested positive, indicating the efficiency of treatment technologies in degrading the virus and the safety of treated reused water.

Cleaning the river Damodar (India): impact of COVID-19 lockdown on water quality and future rejuvenation strategies

Baisakhi Chakraborty et al.

Summary: The study found that the water quality of the river Damodar was highly polluted before lockdown, but around 90.90% of samples showed improvement to good quality during the lockdown period. The implementation of the Water Pollution Index (WPI) showed significant differences in water quality parameters between the two periods, indicating a statistical improvement in river water quality. The spatial mapping using Arc GIS 10.4 interpolation (IDW) helped in understanding the spatial intensity of pollution load in the two periods.

SARS-CoV-2: sewage surveillance as an early warning system and challenges in developing countries

Deepak Panchal et al.

Summary: Transmission of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in humans can occur through respiratory droplets or contact with contaminated surfaces. The presence of the virus in feces and sewage systems raises public health concern, with monitoring through sewage potentially providing epidemiological data on COVID-19 trends. Tracking the virus in sewage could serve as an early warning system for public health authorities to take necessary actions.
