Corporate governance and investment sensitivity to policy uncertainty in Brazil

Daniel Ferreira Caixe

Summary: This study investigates the role of corporate governance in the relationship between investment and economic policy uncertainty. Using the context of Brazil with poor investor protection, high private benefits of control, and premium listing segments, the researcher provides evidence that well-governed firms experience a stronger negative impact of economic policy uncertainty on investment. The moderating effect of corporate governance on investment sensitivity to economic policy uncertainty is found across companies with different levels of financial constraints and investment irreversibility. These findings suggest that stricter governance practices can mitigate opportunistic behavior of controlling owners in risky investments.

Global uncertainty, economic governance institutions and foreign direct investment inflow in Africa

Oliver E. Ogbonna et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impacts of global uncertainty and economic governance institutions on FDI inflow to Africa. Natural resource endowment, market size, and initial FDI inflows are identified as robust drivers of FDI inflows to Africa.

Economic policy uncertainty exposure and corporate innovation investment: Evidence from China

Xin Cui et al.

Summary: The study found a significant negative relationship between firms' heterogeneous exposure to economic policy uncertainty (EPU exposure) and corporate innovation investment, influenced mainly by operational risk and financial distress, as well as firm-specific factors such as government ownership, subsidies, profitability, R&D personnel level, and net working capital sufficiency. This research provides new evidence on the impact of EPU exposure on firm behavior in China amidst significant economic and financial reform uncertainty.

Institutional investment horizons, corporate governance, and credit ratings: International evidence

Hamdi Driss et al.

Summary: The study finds that firms with higher long-term institutional ownership tend to have higher credit ratings, especially during times of higher expropriation risk, for firms with weaker internal corporate governance, and in countries with lower-quality institutional environments. This suggests that long-term investors improve a firm's credit risk profile through effective monitoring, facilitating access to debt markets for firms facing severe agency problems.

Economic policy uncertainty exposure and earnings management: evidence from China

Xin Cui et al.

Summary: We investigate the impact of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) exposure on the earnings management behavior of Chinese firms. We find a significantly positive relation between EPU exposure and firms' earnings management, which is more pronounced for firms with weaker external monitoring mechanisms. Financial distress and cash flow volatility are identified as the dominant mechanisms linking EPU exposure to earnings management for firms with high leverage and high-growth firms, respectively.

Do public banks reduce monetary policy power? Evidence from Brazil based on state dependent local projections (2000-2018)

Nikolas Passos et al.

Summary: The study tests the hypothesis that public banks reduce monetary policy power by comparing the effects of monetary policy during high credit periods of public banks and private banks. Contrary to previous beliefs, the research finds that monetary policy is not less powerful during periods of high credit from public banks. Public bank credit may lead to lower financial cost transmission, less reduction in capital stock, and lower exchange rate variation.
