Emerging inflammatory bowel disease demographics, phenotype, and treatment in South Asia, South-East Asia, and Middle East: Preliminary findings from the Inflammatory Bowel Disease-Emerging Nations' Consortium

Rupa Banerjee et al.

Summary: This study provides epidemiological data on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in newly industrialized countries of South Asia, South-East Asia, and the Middle East. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is twice as common as Crohn's disease (CD) in these regions, with a male predominance. UC is mainly distal and treated with mesalamine, while CD is predominantly ileocolic with low rates of perianal disease and smoking. Diagnostic delay for CD is common. The use of biologics correlates with the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita.
