Current breakthroughs in the hardwood biorefineries: Hydrothermal processing for the co-production of xylooligosaccharides and bioethanol

Pablo G. del Rio et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal treatment is highlighted as a promising first step for lignocellulosic biorefineries using hardwood due to its high selectivity for hemicellulose solubilization as xylooligosaccharides, but it lacks efficiency in cellulose to glucose conversion. Therefore, combining with strategies like delignification or mixing with other renewable resources is suggested to increase ethanol production.

Production of bioethanol from four species of duckweeds (Landoltia punctata, Lemna aequinoctialis, Spirodela polyrrhiza, and Wolffia arrhiza) through optimization of saccharification process and fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Ahmad Faizal et al.

Summary: Duckweeds are considered as promising sources for bioethanol production due to their high starch content and fast growth rate. After optimizing the saccharification and fermentation process, four species of duckweeds showed potential in producing significant ethanol concentrations, indicating their suitability for bioethanol production.

Optimization of OPEFB lignocellulose transformation process through ionic liquid [TEA][HSO4] based pretreatment

Muhammad Nurdin et al.

Summary: Research on the transformation of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches (OPEFB) using ionic liquid triethylammonium hydrogen sulphate (IL [TEA][HSO4]) has shown promising results, with the successful synthesis of IL [TEA][HSO4] and optimization of composition and pretreatment temperature leading to the highest cellulose content. This suggests the potential effectiveness of IL [TEA][HSO4] in the renewable energy sector in the future.

Effectiveness of Green Chemical Solvent-based on Triethylammonium Methanesulfonate Ion Liquid for the OPEFB Pretreatment Process

Muhammad Nurdin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness of triethylammonium methanesulfonate ion liquid (TMS IL) in the pretreatment of OPEFB lignocellulose, showing promising results for bioethanol production. The use of TMS IL resulted in a significant reduction in hemicellulose and lignin contents, while cellulose content increased. These findings suggest potential scalability for bioethanol production based on OPEFB lignocellulose.
