The geography of nonstandard employment across US metropolitan areas

Summary: The nonstandard workforce in the US has remained at around 10% of the total employed population for the past decades. This paper analyzes the contextual factors that explain the geographical unevenness of the nonstandard workforce across US metropolitan areas from 1997 to 2017. The study finds that urban context matters, but the impact varies across different arrangements and time periods.

The Adoption of Public Pre-Kindergarten among the American States: An Event History Analysis

Summary: In recent decades, there has been a significant increase in publicly funded pre-K programs in the United States, with 45 states and the District of Columbia adopting them. Through event history analysis (EHA) using data from twelve datasets, this study examines the factors influencing states' decisions to adopt public pre-K. The findings suggest that party dominance in the legislature, legislative professionalism, and unemployment rates are associated with pre-K adoption, while regional proximity to previously adopting states is also significant. These results have implications for policymakers and advocates in the early childhood education sector, particularly in terms of expanding pre-K eligibility requirements.

Blocking the progressive city: How state pre-emptions undermine labour rights in the USA

Summary: In the United States, some states have laws that restrict cities from enacting ordinances related to labour rights, with states with lower minimum wages and weaker union presence more likely to do so. Unions can serve as a source of pushback against these pre-emption laws, but in Republican-controlled states, higher unionisation rates are associated with more pre-emption of labour rights. Using Wisconsin as an example, strong labour protections can trigger states to undermine labour rights despite public pushback.
