Capturing the Gender Gap in the Scope of Parenting Related Leave Policies Across Nations

Alison Koslowski

Summary: This article contributes to the conceptual and technical development of cross-national measurement and analysis of the gender gap in parenting related leave entitlements. The research found that only two out of 45 countries included in the analysis had achieved a zero-gender gap in terms of entitlement to 'well-paid,' individual parenting related leave during the first 18 months of a child's life. The average gender gap for the countries in the analysis is between two to three months, and only seven countries offered more than two months leave to fathers as an individual entitlement.

Coronavirus and care: How the coronavirus crisis affected fathers' involvement in Germany

Michaela Kreyenfeld et al.

Summary: This paper examines how the time fathers and mothers spent with their children changed during the first lockdown in Germany, finding that both parents increased their childcare time, with differences by education level. Despite women still performing the majority of childcare tasks, the results suggest a positive potential for increased paternal involvement in contemporary societies.

A gendered pandemic: Childcare, homeschooling, and parents' employment during COVID-19

Richard J. Petts et al.

Summary: For parents with young children, the loss of full-time childcare increased the risk of unemployment for mothers but not fathers. However, father involvement in childcare played a significant role in buffering against negative employment outcomes for mothers. On the other hand, participation in homeschooling for school-age children was associated with adverse employment outcomes for mothers but not fathers.

Parenthood as a driver of increased gender inequality during COVID-19? Exploratory evidence from Germany

Lena Hipp et al.

Summary: The study found that during the pandemic, parents were more likely to reduce their working hours, with mothers more likely than fathers to do so. Despite parents sharing childcare responsibilities more evenly, mothers still took on more childcare work than fathers. The division of household labor remained largely unchanged, leading to lower satisfaction reported by women, especially mothers, during the observation period.
