Genetic-based Monte Carlo Modeling of geothermal prospects: Indian examples

Anirbid Sircar et al.

Summary: Modeling reserves of geothermal reservoirs in Gujarat and Maharashtra in India is still in its early stages, with the use of Genetic-based Monte Carlo Modeling for the first attempt at reserve estimation for shallow prospects. The study collected a range of input parameters from geophysical and logging surveys, using genetic-based steps to assign probabilities to likely outcomes of reserves. The model identified areas with high heat capacities, such as Shirdi, Saputara, and Harsani, showing promising potential for geothermal resources.

Cracking propagation in expansive soils under desiccation and stabilization planning using Bayesian inference and Markov decision chains

Babak Jamhiri et al.

Summary: This study investigated different cracking prediction models and performed sensitivity analysis to evaluate the uncertainties of the models and parameters. The findings suggest that the linear elastoplastic model provides reasonable predictions, while soil parameter variations play an important role. Furthermore, the findings of this study can improve the decision-making processes for expansive soil stabilization by considering a variety of environmental conditional probabilities.

Effect of Soil Spatial Variability on the Structural Reliability of a Statically Indeterminate Frame

Zhe Luo et al.

Summary: This paper presents a probabilistic procedure for assessing the structural responses of a statically indeterminate frame caused by soil spatial variability, revealing the dominant failure mode of strength failure, in-plane buckling failure, and out-of-plane buckling failure. This study developed an innovative procedure for researchers and practitioners to assess the superstructure performance subjected to uncertain subsurface conditions.

Probabilistic Analysis of Tunnel Roof Deflection under Sequential Excavation Using ANN-Based Monte Carlo Simulation and Simplified Reliability Approach

Mingliang Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, a three-dimensional model was developed to analyze the sequential excavation project in the Lijiaping metro tunnel in Chongqing, China. By defining the characteristics of soft rock layers as random variables, a probabilistic analysis was conducted and two different approaches were used to solve the reliability problem. The proposed ANN-based metamodel accurately predicted tunnel roof deflection, providing an economical and accurate approach to estimate probability.
