The farm-by-farm relationship among carbon productivity and economic performance of agriculture

Silvia Coderoni et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between carbon productivity and economic performance of farms using data from Italy. The results show that the relationship is non-linear and varies across different farm types. Higher levels of carbon productivity seem to be associated with better economic performance, suggesting the potential for green growth in agricultural production.

Policy responses to COVID-19 pandemic waves: Cross-region and cross-sector economic impact

Andrea Bonfiglio et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a modelling approach to assess the economic impacts of COVID-19 restrictions across regions and sectors. The approach allows for evaluation of alternative policy responses to future waves of the pandemic, in order to strike a balance between containing contagion risk and minimizing economic losses. The study highlights the importance of flexible and tailored policy interventions based on successive waves of the pandemic, using Italy's experience as evidence.

Aerodynamics Effect of Holes in UAV Wings Modified for VTOL Capability

Laith S. Sawaqed et al.

Summary: This research explores the possibility of modifying the X8 Skywalker from a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle into a convertiplane. Computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel experiments were conducted to analyze the performance of different wing configurations. The results indicate that the proposed modifications can generate enough lift despite reducing the wing area, with the filleted hole configuration demonstrating less drag and turbulence effects at low angles of attack.

Development of agri-environmental footprint indicator using the FADN data: Tracking development of sustainable agricultural development in Eastern Europe

Vida Dabkiene et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of environmental issues in the EU agricultural sector and changes in CAP policies on farm practices, introducing the Agri-environmental Footprint Index (AFI) as an evaluation tool. The results demonstrate that in Lithuania, medium-sized farms specialized in field crops-grazing livestock are the most environmentally friendly. Therefore, testing different weighting schemes is preferable for practical application.

Modelling Transitions to Sustainable Food Systems: Are We Missing the Point?

Jesus Barreiro-Hurle et al.

Summary: The article highlights concerns from agricultural stakeholders about the potential impact of the Farm-to-Fork and Biodiversity strategies on the agricultural sector, attributing reported reductions in agricultural production in the EU, deteriorating trade balance, and increased prices to the narrow focus of current analyses. The authors argue that the strategies include a broader set of interventions not accounted for in the analysis and that limitations in the tools used hinder a comprehensive understanding of potential impacts. Improved modelling approaches suggest reported impacts are an upper bound, and limited evidence exists on the co-benefits of environmental improvements targeted by the strategies, indicating a current inability to fully assess the impacts of transitioning to more sustainable food systems on the agricultural sector.

Key policy questions for ex-ante impact assessment of European agricultural and rural policies

Silvia Coderoni et al.

Summary: Policies in the agricultural and rural sectors are transitioning from market-based to influencing farmers' decision-making, requiring evidence-based models that simulate individual decision-making. This study focuses on European agricultural sector's key policy objectives and benchmark scenarios to define a research agenda for IDM models. Findings highlight environmental policy objectives as most relevant for future European agriculture, emphasizing the need to consider trade-offs between economic and environmental goals in scenario modeling exercises.

Analysis of farms characteristics related to innovation needs: a proposal for supporting the public decision-making process

Andrea Arzeni et al.

Summary: This study aims to propose a method to deduce farms' innovation needs using economic and financial results of the Italian FADN survey, and to support the macro objectives of European Rural Development Policy. By calculating indicators for homogeneous groups of farms, critical farm issues related to innovation needs have been highlighted. Measures of the Rural Development Programs have been proposed for each farm critical issue as an example of application.
